Little scooter has poops, What can i give him?HELP!
I posted on here about a little boer goat that was born small,(tiny little scooter) 1.5 pounds, now he's a whopping 2lbs, he's 6 days old now, and yesterday morning, he had very EXTREMELY HARD orange poop, like normal baby poop, but was really hard, so i gave him some white corn syrup, (STUPID) now he has the watery poops, he is very energetic still, playing and what not, but i know if i can't get it stopped he'll get sick. so any suggestions on diarrhea? oh by the way, the poop doesn't stink at all, really doesn't have a smell...and he has no temp.
Been feeding him 3.5 ounces five times a day, is that enough? or too much? he is only 2LBS now, but 6 days old....I need some help with this...anything would be helpful....just gotta get the poops under control ASAP...
been feeding him raw goats milk.
oh i was reading about coccidiosis(sp) can i treat him with some albon (for puppies and kittens) just incase it is? I was reading you should assume all diarrhea is cause by cocci? is that right?

I think he's too young for cocci. it was most likley the corn syrup. You could give him some pepto bismol it might calm things down.I'd only give him 1 or 2 cc's and wait and see. You might want to start increasing the milk..slowly! And i'd wait till the poops are better.
good luck with the little guy

well i called my vet! HA he's something else, said not to worry about it, stress causes diarrhea, and taking him away from his mother could give him that! YEAH RIGHT, little scooter was so weak, and small when he was born, he could have cared less about anything...and i told him he was 6 days old now, that there wasn't any stress.
I did the pepto like you said, didn't know how much, hope 3cc wasn't too much.
Oh yeah and i goofed on the weight, or my scales are messed up, he weighs 3.5, he was wiggling around earlier, so i did it again right after he woke up, he was more still, an it said 3.5
how much milk should i slowly increase it to? he's so small that i don't want to over feed him...
thank you so much!
and it's amazing, i put the pepto in the bottle and he sucked it right up (while i was singing the pepto songLOL) I can't even stand the taste!

Did you give it to him more than once?
Just like in people it may take some time. I'd give him some 2 or three times a day till it starts to firm up. I would not give him more than 2 cc at a time.
Does the poop smell bad?
Is he able to eat grass? If he's out side on the grass and just started eating it it could cause this.
A little yogert couldn't hurt either.Put it right in his bottle. just a little! like a teaspoon. make sure it's the yogert with live cultures in it.
watch his belly too. you don't want him to bloated.
you could take his temp too..thats always good to know.
Don't increase his milk till he's been OK for a few days

thanks, i gave him another dose this morning of pepto just 2cc, no it doens't smell bad, really doesn't have a smell, he isn't eating grass yet, i took his temp, it's normal, the little guy is still very energetic, plays a lot, like kids should. gonna wait like you said to increase the milk, until the runs are gone. i'll try a tiny bit of yogurt.
atleast he's still acting like a kid!
gonna give him a another dose of pepto when i feed him again. I do appreciate your help!

Please stop putting stuff down his tummy. Warm milk, as much as he wants to take 4 times a day. Once 10 pounds you can go to 3.
If he is constipated get baby glycerin supositories from wallmart and use them. Let the diarrhea you caused with the Kero run it's course.
Get a tube of Priobios for horses at TSC or the feed store. Give him a little lima bean size amount swiped into his mouth after every bottle until he is up and around well.
I would keep something this small off the grass, I would have him in a pen with shavings and some alfalfa hay. He has a very small immune system, he will have a hard time regulating his body temp in the heat. I would treat him like the premie he likely is, even if he was full term, he could have been an egg that got fertilized very late.
He is way to young for cocci or worms, and he shouldn't be around any other poop at his weight that contains anything like that anyway! Vicki

i second above post. nothing goes in his little mouth than milk, probios and/or kefir. think his stomach as a big cheese factory.
i would also give a shot of bo-se and fortified vit b.
did he get enough colostrum?
cocci and most parasites have a life cycle of 21 days (view are longer)
at six days old he is way too young for that.
kids at his age can get sick with e-coli but it is smelly and he would be very sick with fewer. another possibility is too much milk, and/or milk too cold.
in your case too much laxative. next time you have a kid with constipation, try warm water with a little bit of dishwashing detergent in his heini. works like a charm

Do you do this like an enema? I've got a little girl who is constipated too. All I've seen is some straining and then a milky substance come out. She will be 3 weeks old on thursday.

thanks you guys for the info, and the help. I do appreciate it, and little scooter is pooping normal. I have to say the pepto worked. and i called my other vet, he said he's not too young for cocci?
oh yeah and he got 2 days of all the colostrum he could hold.
I trust my other vet (not the one i called him about the other day)i trust him with all my other animals, but just not sure if he's any good with goats.
so all in all i learned a valuable lesson...NO CORN SYRUP for constipation.
thanks everyone!
