Registered alpines ?s

So, I'm beginning my foray into registered goats. I'm pretty sure I'll be purchasing a purebred registered alpine ff with her doeling(also registered) for $200. They're beautiful, of course. She showed me the registration paperwork but I'm really not sure what to specifically ask regarding register info. She's milking 1/2 gallon a day and feeding her kid.

They've been wormed, vaccinated, idsbudded, and never left the farm. Her dam and sire tested CAE negative but these gals haven't been tested. Should I test before i take them home or is it a safe bet they're ok if parents were neg. and they've had no other exposure?

Also, they have a 'grade' nubian for sale with registration papers saying that if bred to a pure buck, kids can be registered. They want $150 for her, ff milking 1 gallon a day, no kid on her. What exactly does 'grade' mean?

Should i ask for the registry # and look up info myself?

Also. she offered her bucks services in the winter but he is the alpine grandsire. This is called line breeding, right? What's the scoop there?

Thanks all!

$200 for a healthy purebred pair! Go for it! I still would test for CAE on both but they sound healthy. Grade refers to any goat without registration papers.

IMO linebreeding can be the best for ones herd or the worse. Look at him & your doe. Do they have the same fault?

Tracy is one of the mods on our forum dairygoatinfo.com ask her, she is an Alpine breeder, shows all over up there and likely knows most folks. She at least could tell you if the bloodline is a good one. Make sure you get the breeding back in writing so she doesn't change her mind this winter when you have no buck to breed to.

A grade simply means she is recorded on appearance, she is not registered as in purebred etc...only her doelings if you bred her to a purebred or american Nubian buck would be registerable, depending upon what her paperwork says. If she is a good milker, will let you lead her out of her pen, put her up on the milkstand and milk her get her if you want the milk.

Biggy is when you are at breeders houses is to do alot of this yourself. The last two I sold they had 4 daughters. I not only had them go get the doe but put her up on the stand, clean their teats, milk them and then put them back into their stalls...I stood in front of the fan and talked to mom and dad there are lots of tricks that when you get the doe home you realize you have purchase a less than milkstand ready doe. Also taste the milk, even fresh out of the doe it should be sweet and creamy, albeit warm.

Did you see the testing results? Or did she just tell you? Vicki

I'm having her send me the registry # today. Also, I'll ask for copies of the cae testing on the parents and ask for breeding aggreement in writing.

I didn't lead them myself but my daughter led the nnubian around a bit. I didn't think to milk them myself while i was there...How many more things can i forget??

I'll check out dairygoatinfo.com as soon as I get the regisrty # and talk to Tracy. Thanks for the tip! I'll keep you all posted.
