Question about alfalfa pellets from Tractor Supply..
Tractor supply doesn't seem to have alfalfa pellets for goats and I don't think the local Lay's feed store does either.. Tractor supply does have horse alfalfa cubes but I know those aren't really useful for goats.. Is there any other alfalfa pellets that I can use that might be marketed for another kind of livestock? Or is the Dumor goat feed good for that? Or is it just grain? I'd got look at some of the smaller feed stores but can't be driving around looking when I can't buy yet..

They sell pelleted alfalfa for horses, cows and goats, its their producers pride brand, its about 13 a 50lb bag here.
Make sure if you have milk goats to get non medicated as most of what they sell is medicated, they dont have a non medicated brand and tiz wiz is all that you can buy without it here.

Thank you Naturaldane.. I forgot that I would need unmedicated.. It's hard to get unmedicated here since there's more problems here with parasites bc it doesn't get cold enough here to kill them off in the winter.

Kittykity, My goats LOVE the Nutrena brand of sheep/goat pellet. I have tried them all, and this is what I feed. Also, I feed them the T&A Chops. I got tired of hammering the alfalfa cubes so they could eat them. This stuff is great...already chopped up.. comes in a bag for around 10 bucks. Mary

Hmmmm....I buy the Producer's Pride alfalfa pellets and I never knew they were medicated . Thank goodness we haven't had any problems. I just ripped the tag off of it today to compare some ingredients. I better check it out again!

I don't believe the horse alfalfa pellets are medicated, but they do have molasses if you're not wanting that in your feed.. But there is a sheep and goat feed that is medicated.. They don't list the ingredients on the website though so don't know if it's an alfalfa feed..

I think we're okay. I don't see anything on the ingredients tag that indicates the pellets are medicated. I'll be sure to be more observant if I have to switch brands for some reason. I like these because there is very little dust.

No, no, the pellets are fine, its just hard to find a goat feed thats non medicated.
The nutrina pellets are medicated, or at least they are here and I was told that was all there was, so basicly in my area the tiz wiz is the only thing I can get, which I sold my milker tonight so no worries now because everything else is pet future breeding stock.

Thanks for clarifying for me. This feed thing REALLY confuses me LOL. My DH and I are trying to come up with our own mix that we can feed to the goats and the alpacas.

I have read the label on the TSC alfalfa pellet, there is no alfalfa in it, just forage.

I feed alfafa pellets that say for horses on the bag & I get it at our local mill. I would think your mill or feed store would be able to order them for you if they don't already carry them.

May I ask why the alfalfa blocks are not useful for goats? Isn't it just pressed alfalfa?

they are hard as mini bricks, mine wont eat the soften ones is the reason I dont feed them, Ive seen a horse get choked on a non softened one. I dont believe there is a direct reason, but rather preference.
Feeds like equine jr and sr are mostly alfalfa btw.
I know what you mean about the mix, every one seems to need something different, but after being tired of a dozen feed bags, enough was enough and now that I dont have a milk doe to worry about, the younger goats are getting forage, and chicken and horse feed mixed, the horse feed is 14% and the chicken is 16% protien, not that they even need feed but they wont leave the horses alone other wise. They also have access to good hay all the time too.

Medicated Feed
Ok, this is the first I've heard about non-medicated feed for horses. I feed the sweet feed from TSC, and a couple of other local feed stores around here. I'm still searching for the best deal and the best feed. My question is, how do you know if it's medicated, and WHY don't you feed medicated to the horses? TIA

If it doesn't list meds on the tag, it's not medicated. No particular need to feed the horses unmedicated - my elderly mare ate Show Goat for the last years of her life and it has a coccidiostat in it. Looking at the other ingredients on the tag, it was roughly the same as Equine Sr and it was half the price. Now I feed the kids goat feed with a coccidiostat, and I'm in the process of switching all adult goats and the horses to dry COB. We are feeding baled alfalfa rather than pellets because it is $12 for 100# bales vs $12 for 50# of pellets. They don't waste 50% of the bales, so it's cheaper to feed the bales. I usually let the goats eat what they want of the alfalfa, then add their leftovers to the horses' ration - the horses clean up all the stemmy stuff nicely. So far, everyone looks healthy and seems happy - young stock growing well, etc.

None of the horse feed should be medicated, I live at TSC and have never seen one that had any meds in it, its hard to find goat feed thats not medicated.
