Spray any type iodine prior to banding and then again after the band is on, this sterilizes the skin, band, and hair.....Make sure sack only, no teats.

And as it gets very close to falling off, flies *can* be a problem so I look at it once a day and if it looks wet at all, I just spray it with something drying and antibacterial. Not common that you will need to, but it can happen and its a lot easier to prevent than to treat.
I have 10 wethers and two steers running around with banded scrotums right now and one out of the bunch has needed sprayed.

Emily is right, a couple of weeks before the scrotum drops off the area can get quite ugly. Rotten looking in fact, if this happens just spray some anti-bac spray as needed. Recently sold a calf and the buyers called in a worried state....Just check out the banded boys during your barnyard visits and all will be well...good luck...TJ

Wink

Shall I post a pic of my young wether. His is about to fall off. This will give you an idea of what it looks like. Let me know so I do not gross anyone out without warning. LOL

And no... it is not rotten-looking at all. Just dried up with a bit of pink flesh underneath.

I tipped him over on his side for this pic so the angle is weird. It is not a very good picture as I had to hold him still AND deal with the camera. LOL But you get the idea.
