We've decided to sell our goats...

I just haven't told my children yet. They totally adore those twin kids, they're not going to have an easy time with this.

I'm thinking $250 OBO for all 4... a 2-3 year old doe, 7 month old doeling, a 2-week old doeling and a 2-week old whether. I hope that's a reasonable price... we paid $150 for what was essentially 4 goats (2 of them just hadn't been born yet) and $110 for the disbudding/castration/shots on the twins. And I guess we'll throw in whatever of their feed is left... which right now is two 50-lb bags and about half of another 50 lb bag.

I did the math on this. We want dairy goats, for milking. We won't be able to breed the older doeling until this fall, which means it'll be next spring before we get any kids/milk out of her. I'm calculating that it could cost us at least $250 in feed for these animals that we'll be getting nothing out of in the meantime. That's close to the price of a doe already in milk, and I've seen some milking goats (4-5 lbs/day, which isn't a whole lot) for less than that. And honestly, I don't even know if I'll get that much out of our doelings when they do start to give milk!

So, we're going to try and sell them soon, and will probably wait until next spring to get more, just saving up our money in the meantime. DH said we could find ourselves a couple milking does here pretty soon, but I'm trying to be realistic here... he *thinks* he's going to have time to milk them while I'm recovering from a cesarean this July, but he never has the time off that he thinks he will.

Wish me luck! Of course I'll have to give the disclaimers... Mama is dry on one side (which *could* be somewhat my fault from milking her only once a day), I don't know exactly what breeds they are, etc. She has gotten better about being milked, she'll stand fine if she's hobbled and eating, but now she's gone dry, so...

In any case, of someone wants them for meat instead of milking (as they are part Boer), is $200-$250 still a reasonable price?

I knew this would be a problem for my children... they just bought me a sock full of coins (about $15) and asked if they could buy the goat kids. They promised to "take really good care of them".

But then again, they promised to take really good care of the dogs they got back in September, which they now ignore for the most part. They're not going to be so interested in those kids when they start getting big or if they start acting obnoxious.

I think that is a reasonable price for all 4. I know how hard it is to tell kids what is best for everyone.... maybe cheer them up by telling them that they will help look for the new goats after the new baby is settled in... good luck with the birth.... don't forget the camera
