Cost of Nubians?

I am wondering about the price of a 2 yr old registered nubian doe in milk.
I am VERY new at this and have been offered this doe for $600. For $1000 I can get her, the 2 doelings at her side and a 1 yr old(not pregnant). All are registered.

She is a very nice lady, all seem to be well taken care of and are very friendly. She is getting rid of everything due to having to travel so much.

What do you think? Should I jump?

Is it 600 just for the milker? How much is she milking?

For that price, get documentation of production and disease testing.

I don't know anything about it, but I've been looking for months and have never seen a registered Nubian in milk for more than $375-$400 or so.

$1000 for all 4 seems reasonable, but $600 for the one sounds a bit steep to me. Unless she has something else that's particularly spectacular about her.

She is being nursed by the 2 babies. She has been milked before but no production #. I was surprised at the $600 but I really have no idea. My gut tells me that my money would be better spent on a pair of does that know what they are doing. I just thought that the members here could give me some insite. Thanks!

Now that you say this - I think that she just wants them all to go at the same time. High price for one - bargain for all.

If the doe is negative for CAE/CL (ask for documentaion), comes from a good breeder, breeder has ORIGINAL registration papers (don't accept copies), in VERY good health, has milking records with her, etc, then I would consider that price for her. Goats are a herd animal, so one by itself gets really lonely. Congratulations on entering the goat world. You will soon find out how entertaining they can be. They are really lovable, smart, and don't doubt they will find their way into the deepest part of your heart sooner than you'd expect..... BTW, you have to breed a doe before they will milk, so keep in mind a breeder that has a buck that will give you service or you will have to purchase one....

$1000 for all four does/doelings is a very reasonable price, especially if one of them is a good milker.

Must be healthy. CAE/CL free. Good milk production etc. I'd say go for it. And like mpete says. Find a good buck to service your does or purchase one. A buck makes up %50 of your herd so it is vital that he be the best you can get/afford.

A 600.00 doe should be used to the show life and with excellent bloodlines, too. She should be a doe milked 2x per day and on DHIR with records. She should be tested CL, CAE, and Johne's free. She should also have a recent LA score. She should NOT be a doe with no health record, no dhir record, no disease testing, and not raising her own kids - or if she is, it's because they get enough milk out of thier show string or they didn't want to bottle raise her bucklings, etc...

If you PM me with her registration number/or registered name, I can look up her previous LA/DHIR information, and get the info on her recent relatives in DHIR/LA scores, as well as any titles they've achieved through the members of the ADGA site.

I just bought four nubian doelings (full blood) for $200 total. There are 2 more does in milk to be had for $125 each.

I sell good nubian milkers with papers for less then that. Unless she is for showing and has a show record already you are spending too much for just a milker even with kids. You didn't say why you wanted a goat unless I missed it. There are very good milkers out there that can be bought for a lot less and be a good exerience for you and your family. For that amount of $$ you could aford to travel a little out of the way to get a milker. Testing is also very important.

For $600 she better come with something on paper to back up that price!
WOWZER.......You need to find out her lines. Even if she has no milk or show records you could trace her lines and see whats behind her.I would do this even if you did all of them..which is a better deal.. but not if their's no milk there.
Prices vary hugely around the country, even in different parts of states. A location would help us.
make sure she has been milked before. If she always raises her kids you may be in for a fight. If she's your first milker it's not a fun way to start.
Let us know where you are, their is likely one of us somewhere near that could give you a hand or help you find somthing that would work for you.
If you have never milked and don't have someone to show you I'd go with a well seasoned doe who it's old hat to and will have patience with you. If not I'd raise a doeling so you would be very comfortable with each other by the time you started milking.
dont' be afraid to ask as many ?'s as you like. Anyone should be glad to talk goat with you!

I just requested pedigree, show and testing information. From her last reply the $600 might have been for 2 does in milk, not just one. One has been milked and has very large teats the other did not want to be milked.

In the answer on why I want a goat - I listened to Randy Pausch's Last Lecture on fulfilling your childhood dreams. One of my dreams was to live on a self- sufficient farm. I already live on 45 acres, have my chickens, a good garden going and breed Thoroughbred race horses so I have a good start. So my research has progressed to dairy. So. . . . I would like a goat for milking.

Naturaldane: Maybe we should talk. My daughter goes to GT but I still could come to Athens!

I think that because I have only milked a horse before I might want to go with a seasoned milking doe.

Look on duh-goat-man web-site for breeders in your area, and surrounding states as well. Look in your ag classifiieds, get an idea of what is available in your area for how much.
In oregon, a family milker is $100 to $300 and a nice show goat is $300 to $800
hth. don't jump at the first goats you see!

Actually the mare I had to milk was fairly easy. I taped 2 baby bottles together, held them up to the cleaned teats, got a few squirts out, pushed her some for a let down and it would FLOW! Some would hit the ground but it worked fairly well. The filly was a little earlier and slow to get up so the vet tubed the colostrom into her.

I had a orphaned colt that I milked my other nursing mare to feed him that worked pretty well too.

I really appreciate everyones comments - It is very nice to be on a positive board.

$600 for one doe is pricey unless that doe is from very good bloodlines, shows very well, and is disease free, And I would want to see a GOOD LA score to for that doe.

Yes for those prices there must be CL CAE & Johnies(sp) testing as well as extensive records.
They are probably (hopefully) very nice animals.
My only Nubian was $200 three yrs ago, but then again she was one of a multiple purchase of Boers, everyone registered. Herd tested for CL.
She had kidded once, is not a flashy girl (ie not show quality)
So..you take into consideration... if just milk is what you want, go elsewhere. If you want to show, this might be a ticket, provided all the above is well documented.

Hey,
For that price I agree with the others, she has got to come with papers, CAE &CL Neg., DHIR and LA. On ocala4sale.com they might have some more reasonable milkers near you. Oh, and I know a lady in North Florida who is selling all her milkers, I picked up one of her does, Tested neg. for everything and has 5.6BF levels,(I get a quart of cream from her w/o a cream separator)
PM me if you'd like her info.
