If you're thinking about getting a disbudding iron..
Get an x30 for your goat kids! I have an x50 that I have been using the past 2 years, and it takes forever to heat, the tip never gets super hot, and it takes several minutes between a kid's horn buds.
I found out my neighbor used to have dairy goats a long time ago. They gave me several clippers and a bunch of empty egg cartons, and I left the garbage bag they gave me them in upstairs. I went to clean my room and used the garbage bag... but when I picked it up there was still another little box in there. I pulled it out and it was an x30 disbudding iron! Yay!
Tried it today, and it works GREAT. Heats up quick, holds heat excellently - and for the first time I've been able to 'pop off' the horn buds like everyone has been talking about! I got perfect, copper burns with the first try, instead of having to go back again and again for re-burning, much to the distress of the kid and me. It was the fastest I've EVER disbudded a kid, and I'm pleased with and sure of the quality that which I did the job.

Nice information. I just got my disbudding iron about a month back. I have yet to use it. I will soon.

Are you sure you had your X50 on D for disbudd and not S for soldering?? My X50 is fast, gets redhot and I can do 10-20 kids in a row without waiting for it to reheat. I've used the X30 and was not as pleased.
Glad your happy with your new iron though......

Very sure it is on "d". While the Calf section of the disbudder gets nice cherry red, the kid tip doesn't. The x30 didn't exactly get red, either, but it burnt so much better.

I also prefer the X-50.

The kid tip is stupid. We retrofit our customers X50 with 3/4 inch ID copper bushings, so they set over the root of the hornbud. The kid tips you can't even get your pointy finger into them, it's why they leave scurs.
I also bet you are set on S and not D. Mine glows cherry red in 20 mintues and I can do kid after kid and it only gets hotter and hotter, so hot that after 10 kids or so I wear a glove to hold it. vicki

okay... I feel stupid even asking.. but where is the D & the S located on the burner? I've got a X-50. I decided I should check mine, but for the life of me (granted I didn't put on my glasses LOL) I couldn't find a switch. I'm not getting scurs, but it's not getting red hot like it use to & seems to take me longer to disbud...

I'm pretty sure it's been set on D, I usually check every time. I did decide to check it one more time, and will run it alongside my x30 this time to see which I really do prefer - I've got more kids on the way today so I should be able to check it soon! I've gotten scurs with my x50 by going from horn bud to horn bud on ONE kid, not letting it reheat between buds. I usually have to let it set to reheat for at least a couple minutes between buds.

I also have an X30 and love it, it works wonderful.
We started out with the "highly recommended" X50 and hated it, exact same problem you had and we used the copper tip Vicki suggests, DH think we just couldn't get it in there tight enough and it didn't heat right.
The X30 is a bit smaller, not as clumsy and works great on my nigies and mini manchas.
