6wk old kid died. Why?

One of our does had her first baby about 6 wks ago. She was above average in size, a good nurser, and has seemed healthy overall. This week we noticed she was coughing a little, but nothing to get too worried over. Or so I thought. My oldest son found her dead last night. We saw her alive and walking around yesterday morning. What gives? And is there something we could do to prevent that from happening again?

And also, Ruby (the mom) always had a huge bag. Should we try to milk her?

Advice, please.

if she is a dairy goat and a good milker, yes, you should milk her.
do you have any parasite control program for your goats?

She's a percentage boer. We're not sure what the remaining percentage breed is. She seems to have plenty of milk, though.

We use safeguard wormer for our goats.

if you use safeguard, like any other womer, take a fecal sample to your vet and have them check if the wormer is still effective. i don't know, where you are locatd but in the humid south, safeguard is very safe, even for parasites.

It could have been any number of things.....worms, coccidiosis and enterotoxemia are all extremely probable this time of year. All can kill fast if given the right breeding grounds.
For prevention of Enterotoxemia, vaccinate the herd with CD&T. Three initial doses 3-4 weeks apart, then two yearly booster shots.
For worms, you need to use something that is not Safeguard, as Susanne said, Safeguard is very safe....its even safe for the worms. Safeguard just doesn't work in most areas at all. It absolutely will not get the bloodsucking worms that cause anemia and death. You need to use Cydectin, Ivomec, etc. Cydectin and Ivomec are bought as injectables or pour-ons, but you give them ORALLY in goats!! Don't try to follow the cattle label and inject or topically apply, just squirt it in their mouths.
For Cocci treatment and prevention, you'll need to use one of the many Sulfa products available. Corid, Albon, Demethox, Sulmet, etc are all for coccidiosis.
Pneumonia is also highly likely in humid areas of the country this time of year. We have to watch for it closely here in southern missouri with all this springs rainfall. Don't have it often, but I am always on the lookout for it.
It could have been anything.......preventable or not its hard to say without seeing the animal. Sorry for your loss.

Based on the replies and some additional research, it appears she must have had enterotoxemia. We have never done a CD&T vaccine before. I'll be researching that now.

Also, I had no idea that Safeguard may not be effective. I live in humid TN, so therefore I guess we need to find a different wormer.

Thanks for the replies!
