Teat tape disadvantage

We've just weaned the LaMancha doelings, and due to space and fencing issues, we used teat tape on the doe rather than separate the kids.

Mistake.

After only three days, we have lumpy milk. I'm stripping her out every hour today, and the vet should be here around noon.

No fever, no hardness, no heat in the udder. I'm hoping with being aggressive, we can ward off full blown mastitis.

The doelings are now in a brand new pen and hollering their heads off. Well, one of them is. Louise is a ----- baby and is doing all the complaining. Edna is chowing down at a feeder she doesn't have to compete at and exploring the new location.

Thank you for sharing your insights on the teat tape. How long did you leave the tape on before you noticed a problem? 12 hours? 8? I'm assuming you still milked her out every day?

Louise sounds like my Shakala. Cute!

Don't forget the hot compess, and the udder cream. Sorry this had to happen to you.

The reason I ask is so that I will not run into the same upset. I am also sorry that this happened to you. How frustrating this must be.

Yes, I was milking her twice a day. The only difference was the babies no longer were nursing during the day, and I used the teat tape during the day.

I was using teat dip after milking, too.

I think we caught it quickly enough not to have a big problem. I've milked her out four times this morning, and only got one itty bitty white clump in the last milking. Her udder isn't hot or tight at all.

I'll post what the vet recommends after his visit.

That is very interesting. Hmmm. I don't know what to make of it. I'm glad you caught it quick.

The vet says he thinks I caught it in time. I'm milking her out about every hour and a half, and there are some tiny clumps, but not much. I milk into a glass jar so I can swirl it and look at a thin film on the inside of the jar. That's what the vet did.

He left me some infusion tips and instructions if it gets worse, but he thinks we're ok.

He is a retired Wisconsin cow dairy lactation expert, so I'm hoping he knows. He does have a tendency to say "quarters" instead of halves on the doe's udder.

That is great that he has that experience. But I am wondering why the teat tape would lead to mastitis? I must have missed something, little slow sometimes, lol.
Glad he says good news.

He said the teat tape was holding moisture at the orifice and making a germ breeding place instead of having air circulating freely.

Oh, thanks, makes sense now. Espically if the little buggers are slobbering all over them trying to get some.

Hmmm, I used teat tape for months with a doe and never had a problem. Curious how you feed?

Free choice alfalfa hay and pellets.

BOSS, grain on the milk stand.

Pretty much what I've learned here.

Other possible factors: she is an aged doe with a large udder and long teats. When she squats to pee, her teats touch the grass. Also, it has been very very wet here in Southern Missouri the last couple of weeks.

Glad that was only a scare. You know what I've been going through with the gangrene mastitis - and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Interesting because teat tape is exactly what I had planned to try to dry her up as a last resort, just before the infection kicked in.

Evening report:
I milked her every hour and a half all day long. The last two milkings had no lumps at all!

She started coming when I called today. Corn chips are wonderful bait.

I'm curious, how much grain?

One pound AM and PM.

What connection are you looking for between the grain and her condition? This is the same feed my other doe gets. I'm confused.
