Quick advice needed; goat teet too "low"

Just kidded a beautiful baby girl! Slight "problem" that "we're" trying to work out now is that my Saanen's udder is WAY low.....like only 4" from the ground.

This is making it very difficult for the baby to nurse. At what point do we intervene? When we put her on her knees & she's lower, we squirted milk into her mouth, but then she just keeps moving "up" the udder, trying to find the teet.

I just left them alone about 10 minutes ago to see if she figures it out on her own.

She will figure it out. Goats have been doing this forever.

Yeah, I knew you were going to say that!

But, just to show you that I do have "some" trust in Mother Nature, I even left them alone for a few minutes to post a picture!

(going back out immediately after posting though)

Baby will probably get the "hang" of it (pun intended!) I have one goat with an udder like that, and the young 'uns always figure it out, although I do help them the first several times. When they figure out where the good stuff comes from, you can't keep 'em off it - LOL!

Oh, yeah! That's a darling li'l girl. She'll figure that teat out in no time, I'm betting.

I asked for the picture on your other thread & here it is, She is awfully adorable. Mom's utter does hang pretty low doesn't it. It'll all work out though, just help her a few times to find it.

It takes every baby awhile to figure out where the milk comes from. I used to stand there and worry because they looked like they were never going to get it. I found that interfering just lengthened the process.

Umm then I looked at your pic. Whew that is low and very full! If she doesn't get the hang of it soon you might want to milk off at least a bit on one side to get it to a more reasonable size.

Now I'm wondering how in the heak am I going to MILK her???

I normally have a 1/2 gallon jar with a filter over it when I milk. There's no way her teet will be above the jar this year. Anyone else have low udders & what do you milk it into? I'm having visions of me having to milk into a cake pan!!!

Too funny! I would try a bowl and have a bucket to dump it into as the bowl fills up.

I would use a shallow bowl if you want to save it to feed the baby, other wise it would just be easier to milk on the ground .
Got a frizbee?

If you had the mom in a milk stand you could easily milk out to the side into a bucket.

Actually, we just had the same problem... we milked her steadily for several days until she shrunk up some. The kids took it from there...

I milked her last night, well over 1/2 gallon & still was a bit hard for baby to get at. This morning she was doing ok, but had to lie down with head tilted to get it in her mouth. Will probably milk more out today.

We had to milk a lot last year even with a kid on her, although not because of the low udder, but because she only had one kid & she was SOOOOO full of milk. I was kind'a hoping for two kids this year so I wouldn't have to milk so much, but hey, I got another doe so I definately shouldn't be complaining!

I had a doe that was like that. She was 14 when she had her last baby so you can only imagine how stretched out she was. The differences was hers touched the ground for the first about 24 hours. Once the kids nursed it a few times she was a little better. I do have picutres I believe somewhere where the baby is laying down and they have their heard turned up to the teat. It was really funny to see. But they got the hand of it
