Purina Horse/Goat/Pig Feed Recall

Purina has recalled several horse products including Senior,
affecting
almost their entire horse feed product line.

Purina has said there are no deaths from their horses feed that has
been
recalled, while some people are reporting There ARE deaths and
illnesses!

The recall was not made available to the general public!!

Notices went to the dealers directly.

On 4/9 Purina recalled 27 equine products including Senior and
Platform
lines.

On 4/21 they recalled another 18 products.

The problem is Aflatoxins which can cause liver dysfunction, immune
suppression and neurological difficulties.>>Aflatoxins are toxic and
one of
the most carcinogenic substances known.

Request forwarding and cross-posting to reach all horse owners who
live in
OH, TN, KY, MS and states east of there, including the Carolinas,
Georgia,
Florida, etc. If you live East of the Mississippi River, you'd best
check.

The actual list of product is available on the Purina site (look for recall info in VERY SMALL PRINT AT BOTTOM). Only goat chow affected was distributed from the NY plant. However, chicken feed, sweet feed 14% were affected from all plants (NY, PA and NC)

Suggest anyone who feeds Purina ANYTHING go look at the list -

EASTERN U.S. VOLUNTARY PRODUCT RETRIEVAL UPDATE (May 8, 2008)
http://www.purinamills.com/includes/PMWebsitepostv3.pdf
Im not sure what site others found this on since NO ONE is posting links, but on the site I found, it was one of the few things on the page at all, and was not in "very small print"

They also explained WHY the "recall went only to dealers"

Quote:
The decision was made to implement the product retrieval through local dealers, whose firsthand
relationships and knowledge of customer purchasing patterns offered the best
opportunity to get information regarding specific products and lot numbers to potentially
affected customers as quickly and clearly as possible. Dealers have been responsive and
helpful throughout the process.
It REALLY helps if you post the ENTIRE set of facts

I did not post a link because when I went to purina I could not find anything about it. I got my info from Smokey Mountain Dairy Goat Association, and since I do trust these folks I posted the recall here. The way I see it better safe than sorry.

Anything under 12 pix is considered SMALL for website use. The link being, 8, is VERY SMALL.

Anyways, the dealers are PO'D, talked to two of them about it today (one a Tractor Supply Store Manager). They looked like the bad guys in this. Purina should have notified everyone publically not relied on the dealers. They don't have people's phone numbers and lists of every person buying feed.

Purina messed up and that's a fact.

But compared to everything else on the page, its not that small.
No one "measures" the font size. Try to be realistic here.
If we were discussing website construction protocol, it might be relevent, but in this case it was made in such a way to imply Purina was trying to hide it.

As to notification, Purina could have made some type of news announcement, but it seems more logical to me that more FEED USERS would be likely to hear it if its posted at EACH DEALER. The people at the TSC I go to know my name and phone number, and mail me an itemized list at the end of the year of EVERYTHING Ive bought there.

Since most of the affected products were bagged in JANUARY, it's pretty unlikely that customers still have a lot of it around anyway

There ARE no "bad guys". A problem was found and they are taking care of it. Whats the "bad" part? If the "dealers are PO'd" its because they are having to do some extra work handling the product, and not because they are worried about their "image"

It just seems to me its getting blown out of proportion.

That is just mushmouth for "Purina doesn't want the bad publicity" - plain and simple!

I watch the news every single day- I go to the feed store once a month. I am more than capable of reading a Lot number off a bag. I am appalled that a company would only notify it's dealers with an internal memo and not the end customer through all means possible!

This is the last straw for me - I will no longer buy any Purina products. We used to feed only Purina to all our animals but the quality started going downhill about 6 years ago and now the only Purina we buy is Layena...but not anymore!

BTW Bearfootfarm - I think it's wonderful that you have a close relationship with your feed dealer but I can assure you - you are in the minority ...
