weak orofices

I have read several times about leaky milk teats and my neighbor has also mentioned it. Is there a way to strengthen the muscle there? Is it hereditary? Can bacteria get up into the teat when this happens?

Hi,
I've never heard of anything that can strengthen the orifice, but it is hereditary, and it is an opportunity for dirt and bacteria to get in there to cause all sorts of trouble. Plus, it's messy, and wastes milk, I cull for it.

I had one doe once that had such weak orifices that whenever she would lie down milk would stream out. I would recommend milking the doe as much as possible, and washing her udder, teat dips, etc. to keep her udder healthy.

there are no muscles there to strengthen. milk let down and leakage is completely involuntary. the teat orifice is like a pressure release valve. some does reach a higher pressure before it gives and squirts out than others. I have one that would start spraying in the morning when she jumped on the stand, after awhile her production adjusted and she no longer does. she just got too full after the 12 hour break from her kids. I agree with leo.

Hmm....I have a half sister to my neighbors doe who has leaky teats. My doe is 2ish and has never shown that trait... should I worry about it?
