Bacterial Scours

Bless my DW heart, but she can't help feeding the babies just a "little extra milk".

She scoured 3 baby goats and then the scours turned dark green and mucousy which usually means salmonella or e-coli. No blood was in the poop though.

Used extra strength Pepto Bismol (18 cc), and a single pump (1 ml) of Liquid Spectam Scour-halt for pigs (oral Spectinomycin). Took them off milk and they have been getting electrolytes (60% dextrose) and a single pump of Nutridrench for the past 3 feedings. Poops are getting back to normal. Hopefully we have saved them.

Extra milk is so hard NOT to give to the little guys who don't want to let go of the nipple. Better to add an extra feeding than to overload on any one feeding.

Dead kids can be the result.

Extra milk causes scours but not bacterial scours. Bacterial scours is caused by....bacteria And starving baby goats of their only calories feeding them electrolyte water can kill them, they aren't calves. Without milk they have nothing to keep them growing, to regulate their body temps, and they are likely dehydrated...and is why they are no longer scouring. 1 pump of the pig pump treats 10 pounds of body weight on the goats and needs to be given 4 or 5 times a day in goatlings, so you can see how this isn't working for you...major antibiotics are needed to get kids through scours from ecoli.

Are you feeding milk replacer? Getting poops back to normal with pepto means you are masking the reason for the diarrhea only. Did they have fever? Ecoli they would have fever.

Get them back on their milk, make sure it is real milk so they can curd it, no other forms of water until their poop is normal. Take a fecal in and see if you are dealing with something bacterial or viral or worms or cocci, or simply too much milk. Vicki
