Well, I did it, I put bands on the boys.
I got the elasticator yesterday and practiced with a piece of material and a doggie treat (only thing I could find about the right size) I couldn't figure out how to get the band off the elasticator though and called Jeffers (where I got it from) for advice.
It sounded easy but when I went to do it, I did have trouble getting the elastic off for three of the four done. (first guy has two bands on because I didn't get it close enough the first time) My husband suggested WD-40 but I thought that would make it too slippery (it did... went flying off when streatched) The only one that was easy to get off was smaller.
I read what everyone suggested so I waited until they were 4 weeks (one buckling kept trying to mount everything) but I think next time I will do it the same time I dehorn.
Hum, I wonder who we can call to do a study on the effects of early or later.
I will also have to get a new assistant. Even though my husband helps me, it really upset him. Especially when he found out we were doing his bottle baby.
So, does anyone have any suggestions on an easy way to do the banding? How to get the elastic off the prongs and onto the goat? Any pictures?
What about banamine? Anyone use it before hand?
Thanks

I know what you mean about getting them darned things off the clip, lol, what I have been doing is I stretch it, get it over the balls where I want it, grab the band with my thumb and forefinger (band still stretched at that point) then release the castrator and the band comes right off. LOL
Also, a little side note the little buckling I did here this year a month ago was SUCH a drama queen, acting like his whole world was coming to an end. Just today I went over to a friend's house to do her buckling cause she doesn't have a castrator tool and did him, told her to be prepared he'd act like the world was crashing... nothing, he walked around, followed us, played, I was like, man, goes to show you what my big bad boer buckling is in the whimp department, lol.

We had the same problem with it using the elastrator to dehorn the ONLY horn we couldn't successfully burn. Finally used a SPOON to snap it down onto the horn.:banana02:

As for the placement of the band, you probably didn't need to put another on there. I like to leave as big of a gap above the testes as possible, because you CAN place it too close to the abdomen.
For getting the band off, I just place it where I want it, release the handles so it's pinching them, then roll it off, never really had a problem getting it off once it's released. Yes, it's gonna pinch them but the band IS cutting off the circulation to the testicles anyways, lol. Plus, I find it better to get the danged band off as fast as possible, because I always feel bad for the poor helper having to restrain the danged boys through the ordeal.

You CAN put it too close? Everything I read said to get it as close as possible. What could or would happen? I did make sure no teats were accidentally trapped.
How old were you banding? I'm thinking because they were a month old, the testies were already established there so there really wasn't alot of room. The way you discribed is what I did and only one came off easily and that was because he was smaller then the others. If I did it when they were being dehorned, I bet there would have been alot more room there.

You want to leave a little room between your band and the abdomen - if something happens and your band wasn't tight enough, and you have to put another band on, you want room to put it higher up.
Banamine is fine to give when you band them - it does hurt, though some (as noted above) do just fine and start playing immediately. The most important thing is to vaccinate for tetanus at the same time.

Be sure to vaccinate for tetanus and I use triple antibiotic on the band itself. The antibiotic makes the band slippery and it slides off easier and it probably does some good about keeping the area free-er of bacteria.

If you get the band to close there will not be enough skin to heal up properly and there will be a gaping hole that won't close up.
It is easier to band in the first week or so because the bigger they are the harder to do the job. The smaller they are the better.
I know a guy who band them as soon as they stood up and started sucking, but that is to early I believe.
OH by the way, if someone banded you somewhere on your body, balls, tits, or what ever, you would not just stand there either.
Just grab that part on you and start squeezing and See how it feels.
I thought so.

I never have trouble getting the band off. I do basically the same thing as Rose, have it almost pinching them and then roll the band off. Always have somebody to hold the kid still.
I think its better to do it when they're younger, it seems to hurt most of them less that way. I usually do it between one and two weeks. The littlest kids are usually the ones that get up right away and dont whine about it. The big kids lay down and grumble and groan.... Usuallu anyway. Poor old kids...

Nope, No problem getting the bands off here before either but I also band at about 2 weeks old. Mine in the past(no bucks this year yet) walk a little funny for about 15 minutes then are off playing again!

This is how I get the band off ... I load my boys in my car drive them to the nice dairy man up the road and he does it for me! lol I usually have them drinking a bottle or eating animal crackers and it is over before they have a chance to swallow. They do act whiney later on in the day though.
My boys still hump deetu. One needs times outs because he will not stop! He lost his little sack months ago and still tries. He is really annoying to the girls.
I disagree with Bumpus, I wait till they are 6 weeks old giving the urethra (sp?) more time to develop well. I actually asked around and read before making that choice. I did not rely on one old time farmer who does it as soon as they stand up.
Also the below sentence of yours I find to be rude. While I am not prude and have been know to say potty words, I find this to be crude.
I did edit it:
OH by the way, if someone banded you somewhere on your
body, balls, t@#$, or what ever, you would not just stand there either.
