frustration and questions
I have a 1 yo doeling that I think is pregnant. I say think because she started bagging up about 5 weeks ago. My buck is in with the herd so I really have no way of knowing when she was bred.
The past few weeks she has been in the back pasture and was getting really huge. 2 days ago I confined her to the small pasture next to the barn and noticed last night she looked much smaller. I didn't find a baby or afterbirth anywhere. I assume she is smaller because there is not nearly as much browse in this pasture ( though she is getting grain and hay).
So, I have an udder (for 5 weeks now) and for the past few days there have been noticeable changes in her tail head. I can practically touch my thumb and fingers around it.
But no signs of a baby. She hasn't shown any signs of being in labor.
I work during the day so I am not home. I check on her as soon as I get home every evening. Wouldn't I have noticed if she had given birth? I guess I'm just freaking out because she has had her udder for so long and still nothing.
Thanks,
Beth

Perhaps the baby/babies have dropped into position for birth. That's what happened with our togg doe last year. The day before she kidded she suddenly looked not pregnant, the next day--new baby boy!

If she had kidded, you'd most likely notice a stringy, reddish discharge, which could last several weeks. I'd guess she didn't have the kid(s) yet.

I agree with 4hmom & nehi. Beth how about giving her a gentle bear hug to feel the legs, head, movement of the kids. I've had them bag up hard 5 weeks plus, it's not common nor is it completely unusual....good luck and keep in touch.

You are not alone. One of my FF girls has been in and out of the kidding pen for 3 or 4 weeks. She has had an udder and goo coming from her vulva. One day she looks very pregnant the next day not at all. It is driving me INSANE! It has to happen eventually, doesn't it??

I just dealt with this and she finally gave me twins. I just sat and watched. She did a wonderful job. Just remember a watched pot never boils.

Sometimes they bloat a bit too, depending on what they're eating. I'm sure she's pregnant and is just hiding those babies from you. Let us know!

I had a kid having a kid last year...she didnt even look pregnant...I noticed her udder, 2 days later it went really firm, that night a lovely doe kid. I have no idea how or when conception happened....the little sneak. She got a beautiful udder which I milked for a few weeks, I then dried her up and let her grow a bit more. Birth wise she did a terrific job considering her size, better than a few of my milkers.

We've had this happen before as well. Just be patient and keep checking on her. Give her some love and attention - maybe think of when YOU were in labor!

Update
Well, 4Hmom was right!
She gave me twins Friday! One male, one female.
They are tiny but beautiful and healthy. She is a great mom and has been nursing well.
I'm having pictures developed today so I'll try and post some tomorrow.
thanks!

Congratulations!! and thank goodness everyone is healthy & she's a good mom. I like to keep my buck in a seperate pen with a buddy till I want to breed them, I think it's better for my girls & boys. I also think a buck has a bigger chance of becoming aggressive if kept with the doe's all the time, but that's just my opinion!
Please do post pictures, always love to see the new babies!!
