Abscess on Teat

Has anyone ever had a doe with an abscess on her teat? All reading that I can find does not suggest that this would be CL.

I think CL is more of a limph node swelling... I have read here about Staph causing bumps on teats and udders... Has she been bit? Is the abscess hard? Pussy? Is she milking?

I just checked out your website cause you are close to me somewhat and your Goats for Sale page is in a different (unrecognizable to me) language.

No help about the abscess though.

MPete, thanks for the reply. I haven't thought about Staph, that would be better than CL. At least I could treat and cure that. She hasn't been bitten that I know of. There have been a total of about 2 or 3 of them. It has a bit of hard tissue swelling beneath it with some puss coming out. She milks fine although she gets a bit tender when I have to repeatedly milk a teat with the abcess on it.

Hi TNMama, sorry I haven't finished my web page. The Goats for Sale page is one of the template pages that still has the jibberish on it.

One of mine had an abscess on her teat last year. I'm pretty sure it started out as a scratch or maybe a sliver got into it - there was a little scab and then she got the abscess.

Just try and drain it, disinfect it and let it heal up. Not much else you can do. It's very doubtful that it is CL in that location.

Chlorhexaderm was the best stuff I found for sores on the udder/teat.

Exclamation Can I vent?

Ok guys can I vent for a minute? I'm back at my work and just wanting to cry. My doe that had abscesses on her teat tested positive for staphacaccus aureus (negative for CL which is good) and as prescribed by the vet we started her on Naxcel antibiotic Saturday, May 3rd. She received 5 days of the antibiotic, finishing with her last shot last Wednesday, May 7th. During this last week she has had a very small amount of nasal discharge.

There has been 2 or 3 abscess in the last few days on her right teat, under the skin, that were not coming to the surface. I had been keeping a close eye on these lumps. Last night I noticed that they were getting larger and firmer but still under the skin and worried what would happen if they ruptured internally.

This morning when I went to the barn, the doe was standing in the corner with her head down, back hunched, and a large amount of greenish “snot” hanging from her nose. I immediately got her on the milk stand and cleaned her face. I gave her a 1cc shot of Banamine (subQ) and a dose of Naxcel. She has refused to take any feed, hay or water. I inspected her teat that had the abscesses under the skin and I believe they have ruptured internally as they appear to be smaller than they were last night. I did milk her out some on both sides to relieve any pressure and milking appeared normal.

I just went home for lunch to check on her and she had some sort of foamy stuff coming out of her mouth. I got her up to see if she was bloated and she does not appear to be bloated. She is very weak on her feet. I got her out in the yard and she just kindof staggered around so I made the decision to take her to my vets and leave her for the afternoon to see if he can figure something out or do something for her. I was so afraid that if I had left her in the barn this afternoon she would have been dead by the time I got home. I felt so bad leaving her in that dog run at the vets, she was so scared..... OK now I'm gonna cry. Can you pray for my girl Daisy?
