Need Advice

I had a doe to kid on friday. she had one when I went out there under the shed. So I go over to see what it was and would you beleave i saw another close to the shed was hers to. No mind you this is in a storm pouring down rain. So I picked up the baby and ran up to the house and we got it dry and warm. It was like a rag doll. Went back to milk some for the baby and she had nothing at all so I to some colustrom(?) out of the freezer and got both to drink some. One brown and white and one black and white both girls.. Question is the one I picked up out the shed is still laying down and just now getting so it can pick up it's head a little. what happened to this baby? Should I just keep feeding and hope it'll get better> She eats good and is getting a little stromger all the time but not no where able to stand and she does try but, like I say she's to week. She has come a long way since friday afternoon tho. Any ideas what happened or if she'll possibly get better or what? I'm working with her all the time about every 1 1/2 hrs. I really think she's alot better. I forgot to say there mother is a percentage boar and not a good mom at all. I only bought her cause I felt sorry for this lady that had to sell her but, I guess she know what a bad mom she was. She has fish tail teats also. She will be leaving here soon. She has never ever acted like she had babys what is wrong with that stupid doe?

If you want the doe to accept and raise the kids you will need to keep trying to get them to nurse from her. If she still doesn't have any milk the kids sucking or if you milk her it may come in. If you feed the kids milk from another doe or store bought milk they won't smell right to the doe, she won't recognize them as hers. If you don't have milkstand you may have to tie the doe up short or someone hold her why you attempt to get the kids to nurse.
Sometimes it takes awhile for a weak/cold kid to get stronger, just keep her warm and fed, sounds like you are doing a good job. Do you have any B complex, Nutra drench, BoSe you could give her?
Good Luck

I've had cases like this. If you keep working with the kid like you are doing, it will get stronger. Do try to get it to nurse from the dam. But the bad news is, kids like this, for me, do not turn out well in the long run. We usually eat the weak ones in the fall because they just are not in it for the long run, if you know what I mean. I don't know why kids can be slow to start. And not all does make good mom's. I cull for that characteristic. My mom's will lick the fur off those little kids, even if the kids are not their own!

I think you are doing the right things to get that kid going. Good luck.

I had a kid like that this year. It was born while it was raining and everything was wet. It was born around 4 in the afternnoon though and by that night was already doing a lot better. But I would keep doing what you're doing. Sounds like she's getting better. Mine was fine and is now playing and growing just as good with the other kids.

Since the little goat is eating well, I'd keep on working with her. Some babies just need a little more help from us. I have a little Nubian goat named Snowflake. She was given to me at a few hours old and was very small and weak. She was able to nurse and slowly grew stronger. This goat has birth defects and I'll either be eating her or giving her to a pet home, but in spite of her challenges, she is now almost 10 months old. She's a bit smaller than other goats her age, but considering she weighed less than two pounds when she was born, has actually gained weight at a fairly normal rate.

She's getting better and better but not yet up. A good friend said she had a vit def. give her 3cc every 8 hrs. B Complex fortified so I do have that and she looking better. I do hope she gets better. I would rather go out and see one dead than get your heart hurt so bad trying everything, but I guess it all goes with raising goats right. I'll keep you posted on her and thanks for all your support and help on this.

WOW! I wasn't sure she would come around when I was reading these posts. I am so glad for you. It's so nice when something works out for the good after you worked so hard to make it happen.
