will this work?

The little weather that I'm kidsitting has been getting really rough with mom. We built him a pen that is side by side with his mom's pen (I've been taking him away every night for the last 2 weeks for the most part). He eats hay and pellets, drinks water and to start weaning him (he is almost 3 months), I started giving him his share of the milk in a little bucket... he has drank a little, but not as much as I would like to see. It's his first morning without suckling, will he go to the bucket so I don't have to worry or should I go back to letting him in with mom under controlled circumstances?

At almost three months, he's old enough to wean completely. My buck kids get pulled at 10 weeks, before they start getting ideas.

so I should offer no milk? he drinks water from the bucket, but really not interested in milk in the bucket, he just wants to suckle.... he's not complaining about being in different pens... I thought he'd stress from not being with mom...

He might stress a little or whine some but he will be OK. I have had wethers & buck's weaned at that age too. They will stay with mom as long as you let them & if you leave wethers with the mom they will keep suckling for months if mom doesn't kick them off.
