Smile Newby Stage 2 Over (PICS ADDED!!!)

Stage 1. Owner of Goats
Stage 2. Survive Stress of first kidding(s)

OK, so to those who have been at it a while or those who jumped into goats with a herd of 20 my little story shall seem like nothing and that's OK. To the wife and I Monday was a big deal.

About 4pm we were out side and as usual we checked the goats to see if any discharge had started (very light) and noticed that Rosie our 9 yr old had some discharge and I figured "good, I'll check her before dark to see if it increases or what not, wish I knew what I was looking for, blah, blah, blah". My thoughts continued along those lines of excitement and starting nervousness as we went in to enjoy a snack and school (homeschool) with the kids. About 5pm (an hour later) I went out to check on our solar and battery levels. As I am walking to the shed I hear "BAAAAHAAAA!". I glance over at the goat pen and see that the dogs are looking very intently into the goat house so I walk over and there are three little kids on the ground and mamma is licking them clean. One is still covered and the afterbirth is just starting so I figure I just missed it. 2 Bucks and a Doeling. We do the first time thing and jump in there to help mamma dry them off ooh and aah for a while. Before going back inside we comment to each other how nice it would be if Molly, our 2yr old did the same. Molly's not due for 5 days so no worries, right ? Well on Tuesdays my day starts at 1am so when my alarm goes off I jump up and get movin, ask the wife to check on the goats while she fixes breakfast and she comment that the dogs were going off about 12:30 and she did then, everything was fine. I shower and get ready, go outside and start the car about 1:20 and decide I'll check on the goats before taking off. I walk over to the pen and shine my light there were and one of the little buggers (kids) has gotten out of the house and is stumbling around. Dangitall! I open the gate and go in to grab it when I do I notice it is soaked, DANGER ALERT DANGER ALERT!!! I half jog behind the goat house and see Molly cleaning HER SECOND KID!! (2 doelings) she too is just starting with the afterbirth.

Making the rest ofthe story short(er);
We have a small (temporary) goat house that Rosie had already laid full claim to when her kids came so in order to get molly and her kids out of the wind I had to rip down fencing, convert a large doghouse to goat house, moved said beast of building, fix fence all before leaving. I finaly pulled out of there about 2:20am.

I figure I missed the birth of the goats from both does by no more than an hour each time and the mammas did great and the kids are doing great. Oh yea, this is SOOOOOO easy. (I am being sarcastic) Just thought I'd share my story.

4pm Monday, stage 1 owner of two pregnant does. 1:20am Tuesday stage 2 owner of 2 Does 2 bucklings(?) and 3 doelings(?).

Dang, now there's a way to get started in goats, you can almost say you got the good stuff without much of a wait. lol, goats on day one, babies on day 2. And, like you said, you got a lot of the Newbie stuff out of the way all in the first week. haha (Don't worry though, we don't want you to feel like you've missed out on newbie jitters, they're goats, they will give you plenty to worry about, fret about, and learn, and it won't ever end.)

Oh by the way... here's another newbie right of passage... you have to learn that when you post about your adorable new babies, you have to post PICTURES. LOL

Wow...thanks for sharing! My first kids are due in May and I'm getting so nervous. I can only hope and pray that things go as smoothly for me/my goats as for you!

They are adorable. I like that 1st one in the first pic, looks like black with some lighter black spotting, and one kind of brownish spot. Too cute, all of them.
