I am bringing two does home tomorrow! What do I need?......

These are my first ever goats and I am very excited! They are both about two months old. One is an Arapawa Nubian Alpine mix, and the other is a Saanen mix.
I bought hay and pellets for them, but I want suggestions on some other things.

What type of bedding for their stall? I was thinking either straw or shavings, but hadn't decided.

What's best for a watering system? Just a rubber pan? Same for the pellets?

How often and how much should they eat?

I have been researching goats for YEARS, but now that I'm actually getting some, I feel like I'm clueless!

Any suggestions, advice, etc. is MORE than welcome. Thanks!

Congratulations!!! I know how excited you are! Mine would nibble on pellets, and hay. I had straw in their bedding at first but am considering shavings for future use. Ask about any madical treatments they've had, including tests for CAE and CL. If they haven't been wormed, I think they are old enough... oh, and don't forget lots of hugs and kisses. They love that!

hey there! meant to tell you about this board when you posted about your new goats to be at Amity.

Looked into your arapawa a bit... very unusual breed as you know. Not sure how that will affect the milking part but you can learn .

Bedding: my favorite is corn husks.

Water: A bucket held to the stall wall by a nail (handle wedged behind the nail) so that the goats cannot tip it over.

Free-feed alfalfa hay, water, and loose minerals 24/7. Can you make a hay feeder? Many good ideas have been posted here - search and you will find.

How old are your doelings? I can't remember. If they are 8 weeks old I might free feed a grain mix 24/7 till they are a couple months older and then cut back to 2x a day grain. Watch that they don't get the runs or eat too much!

The best food is exactly what your friend, the goat soap maker, is feeding them. Ask her. Try to get the same exact hay, same sort of watering system, etc. Change feed only slowly and gradually.

Ask if the doelings have had any shots or worming stuff.

enjoy!

Free feed the hay, prefferably off the ground in some sort of hay rack to minimize waste. Right now, the does don't need any grain or alfalfa pellets. I only feed grain or alfalfa when does are in late stage pregnancy or lactating.

Feeding the pellets won't hurt, however, and will probably tame them down for you. However, be careful starting them on their new feeds; They are used to what they are eating at their previous home and any quick changes can kill them. Start slow with any changes!

Any kind of bedding works just fine, and plan on cleaning it out 2-3x per year.

Do they have an out door run?

Congrats on your new does! Hope to see pics when you get 'em home!

Congrats!! You must be overboard excited!
I would ask the breeder for at least several lbs of what she is feeding now before changing them over..as already stated, very s l o w l y.
After they get settled in for several days or a week or two if you need to change them over do it 1/4 c at a time for a couple of days added to what they are used to, slowly increasing from there.

Congrats on the new goats...you will love them they are soooo much fun!
I prefer shavings...easier to scoop out. I also offer baking soda 24/7 for upset tummies from eating too much. They LOVE to have stuff to jump up on...big electrical spools are great for that..or a picinic table..any table...stack of pallets...bales of hay. My 2 babies just turned 8 weeks and they are still getting milk from mom. Plus I feed them all a total of 2 cups of grain (horse grain 14%) Black oil sunflower seeds are their favorite treat. Good Luck! and remember to post some pictures!

The girls came home on Sunday and we just LOVE them! They are eating hay like it's going out of style, and they have been nibbling at their grain, as well.
They will both be two months old next week; Ruthie on the 30th, Gladys on the 29th.
Here's a picture of them on their first day home

OOOH - you in trouble now!

If you have a local City,County or State shop nearby, stop and ask if they have any old concrete culvert pipe (the 24" round stuff). My goats LOVE to play "Queen of the pipes".
