Please help. Premature kids...

My goat just had babies. I have to go out in a second and watch her for more. She's had three and two were born dead. The other one I have in the house and have gotten some colostrum in him. They are two weeks early.

What would cause this and what is that pink pendulum hanging from my goat's rear? Is she done? I tried to bounce and I can't tell a thing. Please help.

Her rear still looks red and swollen and that pink thing is hanging out.

So does that mean she's done?

She should be, but watch her. Have you tried to bump her? Give her some warm molasses water.

Usually, when the afterbirth is hanging out, they're done. Some breeders will go in and check for more babies. I usually don't, especially if they've had three, the afterbirth is coming and the goat doesn't seem in distress. As far as why she kidded early, we don't always know. She may have been butted by another goat. If you have some dexamethasone, it could help the kid with lung development. I got some from my vet when I had a preemie. She just got a wee bit like 1/4 or 1/2 cc. Keep feeding the little guy, make sure he stays warm and hydrated and that he poops and pees. Good luck with him.

Most likely done. You can "go in" and check.

Okay, the thing hanging out of her is little, like a shooter marble. If she had already passed the afterbirth, would she still have this thing?

Yes, they can have that for a while. How's the little guy doing inside? Did you milk out some colosturm for him?

Yes, I got some colostrum from Mocha, his mother, for him. He doesn't like the baby bottle nipple. He sucks on my finger strongly. We'll keep working on him. He is so beautiful. He's red with a black face. He is also covered in white spots. He has one really big spot on his neck. He looks like a moon and stars pumpkin, except he's a goat. I think I may love him. His mother is called Mocha and her companion doe is called Latte. I'm going to call him Starbux. I hope he lives. When I "maaaa" at him he gets excited and tries to stand, but he can't yet. He's just not strong enough... Yet.

Today seems surreal. Like a bad dream. I felt sacreligious throwing away his perfectly formed, but stillborn siblings. Triplets. Three bucks. Only one lives.

Well, I guess we take what we can get. Life is life and so far I've still got one.

And he's so beautiful.

Starbux is doing great today. He's nursing from the bottle like a champ! He finally peed and pooped and he stood up to do it. This morning he took a few very wobbly steps.

He looks just like Bambi on ice.

I will post some pictures as soon as the morning rush is over.

I think he's going to be fine!

Glad Starbux is doing well now. Love that name by the way, all three of the names are adorable.

Mama is alert and acting normally, though there is some goo hanging out of her butt. I'm a little concerned that she hasn't passed her afterbirth. I saw something pink in the straw after the final kid was born, but I was too distraught to pay attention to it.

What should I do with the long string hanging out? It's getting dirty. I don't want it to go back inside her like that. Can I cut it off?

Congrats on your little buck. Sorry that the other two didn't make it. Sad, but that's life.

The doe may have already passed the afterbirth and eaten it when you weren't there. Don't worry about the goo hanging out now, it will come out when it's ready - it won't go back in.

Don't pull on the goo, or cut it off. She will proceed naturally. Glad she's doing well.

Yayyyy, Starbux!! That's a wonderful name, he sounds simply gorgeous. Good luck!
