Talking How many goats does it take

To change a lightbulb?

Just one, apparently. The ceilings in my barn are a bit low - retrofit hayloft - and as the winter goes on, the bedding gets deeper. Last night I had to change a bulb in the pen, so went from a standard "round" bulb to a new compact fluorescent spiral bulb. This morning, as I was milking, I saw Coco, the Alpine wether, up on his hind legs, with his front feet braced on the rafters, chewing on the bulb! I hollered at him, and turned the lights off on that side, hoping that he would stop. Nope, that was even better, and I heard teeth scraping on glass. At that point, I removed the bulb.

I just paid off a vet bill on this goat - he's the one that had the kidney infection - I don't need another one for electrocution!

Oh boy he sounds naughty! We have those heavy glass jars around our bulbs for protection. But they are completely out of reach anyway...they were installed by an electrician that said it was "code" in a barn. I wonder if you could make some kind of box to cover it out of 1"X2" wire fence. It's a good thing you were there when he did it!!!!

Try folding a pice of chicken wire into a box and stapling it to the ceiling around the bulb. I did that in the old barn when I had horses in there to keep their nosey selfs from burning down the barn. LOL So far i've been lucky that the goats can't reach anything electrical, but it's protected anyway

Yep, I figure I'll have to make some sort of cage to protect the bulb - maybe hardware cloth. I think chicken wire might be too flimsy.

We've already had to cage the light switches - for a while, I thought I was going nuts, finding the lights on when I was positive that I'd turned them off!

Coco is a naughty boy. He's been hobbling around the last few days because, I think, he got one foot caught in the plastic safety fence sticking his tongue out at my new buck, and sprained his pastern joint. He'll stand on it, and walk slowly, just won't use it when he's motoring, so it's nothing serious. And I'm still trying to figure out where he got the pink stain down his throat. When he was so sick, we thought it was blood, but it's still quite pink. :baby04:

I have a doeling that has a fasination with lightbulbs too, My doe, jumps up in the window and stretches out and licks the bulb and mouths at it. For several days I was comming into the barn to find the bulp twisted out enough that it wasn't lighting, and then saw her do it!

I wonder why? I guess because its something bright and hanging above their head, and the fact that they should do something with that white thing up there!

Because they're goats!
