Anyone use Cattle mineral?

Just came back from the mill and they sell a Land O Lakes Rangeland 17% tub for cattle. Anyone ever tried it?
Thanks Paul

I'm not familiar with that particular mineral, but I have used a loose cattle mineral in the past. It was a dairy cow mineral, as opposed to a beef cow mineral - more calcium, I guess? I now have a source for mineral specifically for goats, so that's what I use.

Is it a hard mineral block? That might make it difficult for them to get enough without wearing out their little tongues.

Thanks for the reply,
It's a big tub. Poured with molasses. I use goat minerals right now. The makeup of the tub was pretty close to a goat mineral but much cheaper. It's big 225 lb.
Thanks Paul

We recently switched to a cattle mineral based on recommendations of others. Vicki - who posts here sometimes - told us about the one we use now. Bluebonnet Techmaster

Here is the breakdown:
http://bluebonnetfeeds.com/pdfs/Tech...%20Mineral.pdf

It's high in copper, which we need here in abundance and also has kelp - which our goats LOVE.

I got some cow mineral from MFA... I guess it's their "regular" stuff. Not sure... but my goats don't like it at all! Won't touch the stuff and it's been sitting there for a while. My horses will not touch the stuff either, and come to think about it... the chickens haven't touched it either. UGH... everyone's picky here!
When I got "goat" mineral... I couldn't keep it stocked!!!

I will have to look into what you all are buying.

yep i use cattle mineral. herd of 6. most have kidded. mineral is real popular right now. herd probably goes through a cup and a half a day. before they kidded it just sat there. they are given a little pellets, can browse yaupon and bermuda hay 24/7. babies growing like weeds. but with bluebonnet feed being sold nearby i do want to get some with copper in it.

I have heard that mineral for cattle work well for goats, but if it is the block they can break teeth on it.
We use Sweetlix 16:8 meatmaker loose minerals for goats. They chow it down like candy at times. Around here with all the moisture in the air (NW Wa state) it cakes up so Im now tossing it in with their feed.
I used to go out with a pan of it....once in awhile someone would eat too much and have scours for a day oh so mush fun. Thats why I top dress it now.

We are currently using the Sweetlix loose mineral and the meat maker roughage tubs. We were using Purina but they just would'nt ever eat it. we switched to the Sweetlix because we were having copper problems. They seem to be healthier. Thought about the cattle minerals because they are so much cheaper.
Paul

PS We kidded in January. It's been so cold. Last night -13. Wind chill -30.
Can't wait for spring.

I use a cattle mineral. Its Right Now Onyx made by Cargill. My goats love it and do very well on it. I don't have a very high opinion of MFA or Purina minerals. Too many shortcuts.

Paul, cattle molassed tubs here are protien tubs, contain minerals like all grain type rations, but are not mineral tubs. Also make sure the protein in the molassas tubs are not coming from urea...should be soy or cottonseed hulls/meal. They usually contain fines from oats etc...for carbs.

I prefer cattle minerals although our loose cattle minerals described above also have horse and goats on the label. Your better off with quality products labeled for the species popular in your area, than paying for a goat label. Vicki

Emily, do you buy your mineral locally anywhere?

I would LOVE to change from MFA! Thanks!

Hey Cricket,
Richards Brothers Feed Store in Mountain Grove carries it. As does Hirsch's in West Plains. I buy it from whichever one I'm closer to at my time of need. The Right Now Onyx is the best. There is also Right Now Gold, Emerald and Bronze.

This is what I was thinking about using. The Land O Lakes Rangeland 17% Tub.
Some people around here are using the Land O Lakes Allstock tubs which do not contain copper. They put out loose minerals for the copper. I would prefer to use the 17% tub with the copper. http://www.beeflinks.com/manual/1800038.pdf
Thanks Paul

I have always used a beef mineral, but recently switched to the sweetlix 12:12 cattle mineral for the copper. My goats do not seem to really like it, but are eating it.

For as many goats as there are in this area, I have a really hard time finding good minerals. All the feed stores try to point me to a "sheep and goat" mineral, and I have to explain that it does not have any coppper, etc, etc, etc.

I have been looking for the Right Now Onyx, but cannot find any, though the other colors are around here. Does anyone have a tag from the Right Now Bronze, Gold, etc? I am interested in how they stack up.

Paul it isn't a mineral tub. It's a grain/molassas supplement tub. It contains no more minerals than if you put our sweet feed. It's first ingredient is molassas, and it contains both animal fat and animal by products...ending with mineral oil. Even in the directions it tells you to supplement with high quality minerals.

I don't know if Iron is a consideration for you at your farm. Here feeding molassas which is mostly iron, with red minerals...more iron, negates all the good copper you are trying to offer. Vicki

Thanks for all the information. Maybe I will skip the tubs and stay with the Sweetlix loose minerals. Most of the dealers around here only sell the Purina.
We have mostly Boers and they won't touch it. We just started using the Sweetlix. Have to special order it in.
Thanks Paul

I sure like this website. 3 years of home schooling from this site.

Well ya know Vicki. After thinking about it for a while. (1/2 the night) I bet thats why I had a copper problem to start with. My goats were doing just fine. Then I started using the Sweetlix Meatmaker tub. Took a few months. But thats when I started to see the lighting of the hair around their eyes and some of their coats starting to turn orange. Thanks for all the great info. Back to straight loose minerals.
Thanks Paul
