Question Kidding ?

How long after birth should it take to expell all the afterbirth?

My Nubian doe gave birth to quads this morning (last one delivered around 7:00 AM EST) and the afterbirth is still clinging. She does still have contractions and the lady I bought the doe from said I should inject (with a needleless suringe) 6cc of LA200 into the birth canal after 6-12 hours which I did just 35 minutes ago.

This is her 4th freshening but first set of quads. We are bottle feeding the babies and gave the LA200 after milking her for the kids (the second time I've milked her today).

She's eating and drinking fine and her poo looks like good solid rasins.

Is there anything else I should be doing?

It looks like she finally passed the afterbirth this morning.

She isn't totally back to normal though. She just laid there when I went up to the pen and sort of looked catatonic (staring off into space). I'm thinking it may have something to do with the fact it is really chilly this morning (40 degrees which is cold for us).

I'll be milking her later this morning so the kids have more fresh milk to drink.

Hi Bob, congrats on the kids! Has your doe been eating and drinking ok? I would keep an eye on her, make sure she is eating (and getting plenty of calcium in her diet) and drinking and probably take her temp just in case...Having quads takes a lot out of them! If she is eating ok and has normal temp, she may just be worn out...plus it is a bit chilly this morning isn't it? bbbrrr

Waygroovy, I checked on her before sunrise, when I saw her in that stary state. My DW took the DD to the bus stop a little later and she was up and eating. Then I looked out and she was drinking.

I've been giving her a standard goat pellet and some extra whole corn with it, along with timothy/alfalfa hay. As us Floridians know, we also have nice green browse this time of year also, which she can get to.

And yes, it is chilly. I thought we were over this by now, but every year around this time (for Osceola county its fair time) we usually get our last freeze or cold snap.

Glad to hear she is up an eating fine! Yeah, after all the heat we had last week I thought winter was over! Kind of glad to get a little more cold weather though. Not ready for summer yet!
