Unhappy Dead Wether

One of my nubian wethers seems to have broken his neck this morning. I'm positive he wasn't sick, no bloat, no moldy hay, current on vaccinations and no worm problems. His head was twisted so he was looking right straight behind him. I have no idea how he did it, but I'm pretty upset. He was my first goat loss. To make it worse, he belongs to my 5 year old niece and she really loved him.

Oh, I am so sorry. Maybe it was through the fence and something startled him?
Hugs to you and your niece.

I'm so sorry this happened. in my experience many animals will die with their heads twisted back I think its some kind of neurologic thing while in the last moments, so I wouldn't assume his neck was broken. not that it helps, in fact it just makes it more mysterious.

What else could it be?? He was fine this morning at 7 when I opened the barn. No signs of anything wrong with him-- he wasn't acting strange at all. He's never even had a runny nose. I do regular fecals and they've been fine. He was up to date on his vaccines. No signs of bloat either. There has been no change in their diet-- same grass hay, oat hay, alfalfa pellets and mineral as they always have.

Sorry to hear this.

Could he have been thumped by a larger goat?

Michelle, I am so sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is and for it to be your first on ever. I lost my first goats ever in August to cancer.
Tell that niece, that he was needed in Heaven and she will see him again sometime.

Patty0315, that is so sweet of you. I sure wish there were more people around like you.

Yes! He was her bottle baby so she would love that. Thank you Patty. BTW she's the little girl that was with me the day I got the sheep-- my sister you met is her mother.

i am so sorry for your loss but i agree that the twisted head sounds more like nuerological issues then broken neck.......
