lost a doe last night

Had a doe deliver triplets on Sat. morn. All seemed fined. When I went out to feed last night she was dead. So now I have three bottle babies to feed. Sweet though her daughters from last year were keeping close to the kids.

Aw. I'm sorry to hear about your girl. Do you have any idea what happened?

What a shame! I'm really sorry to hear that. Will you get a necropsy done on her to fiind out why?

How are the kids? Boys or girls?

I'm sorry for your loss. That must be heartbreaking for you. Good thing the "aunties" were keeping the babies close by.

Sorry you lost your doe. I've had that happen before. It was probably milk fever.

Yes this was a non alfalfa liking goat. I would trick her by giving her only a hand full of alfalfa and no grain, since she was hungry she would eat a bit of it then just turn her nose up at it. It is a shame she was in real good condition and while she was not a good enough milker to keep a doeling she was a great mom and a sweet girl. She seemed to be fine during the day. kids nursing or at least they seemed to be. Usually when a kid is hungry it will make a fuss. It is very possible that it was milk fever with little to no signs. If so she went down real fast. I suppose even if I had noticed a problem It was so severe I could not have done anything.
The kids are fine, two bucks and a doe-polly, peanut and puck.
The other non alfalfa liking goats are getting that food grade lime from now on.

Do you have any CMPK on hand just in case?

I am not sure calcium is your problem. I would think you would have seen some signs.

I am thinking a small uterine tear and she slowly bled out . Did you cut her open ?

Did you worm her after she kidded? That would be one of those deaths with no signs.
The parasite loads can easily become lethal after kidding.

This is very possible, I have seen it happen. They just fade away with no signs outwardly.

She was wormed. I did not cut her open. I suppose she could have torn internally. She actually had a bit of a problem delivering. The fist buck came out fine. The second took forever. I could see the sack full of fluid and when I inserted my fingers I felt feet and teeth so I let her work it out. I then realized the sack I saw was not the sack that kid was in. It was an empty sack fluid only. Once I tore that sack the second kid was able to get thru the birth canal. The third was breech but not a problem. So it is possible they were fighting for position. I will never know.
