Ugly Dogs

We live near a forest preserve with hiking trails, so occasionally on weekends people from the city will drive out and park in the area and then walk to the forest preserve to enjoy the hiking trails. I was out in the yard a week or so ago, during a very brief spell of warmer weather, and I'd let the goats out to forage so they were helping themselves to some shrubs along the fenceline.

A pair of nice older women walked by and stopped and stared, then asked me "what kind of dogs are those?" I thought they were being funny so I said, "the kind you milk!" That got me a really weird stare. My wife, who was outside with me realized they weren't joking and told them they were goats. They then had to come get a closer look, having never seen an actual goat before.

Too funny. I do think you should have left them wondering about milking dogs though!
I had someone ask me once if that was a cocker spaniel sitting in my lap, nope it was my 2 week old boer x bottle baby with me as I picked up my daughter from dance.

We also experienced the "vet" visit. We were still in the city and our dog vet was helping with the new goats we purchased as we were still dumb! They were 2 nubians about 2 months old and we also had one of our dogs with us. Everyone had a collar and leash on and we were in the waiting room. There was a elderly lady waiting and she just knew they were dogs and wanted to know what breed they were. We sat ther for 1/2 hour trying to convence her they were goats! The vet even came out and tried !

Last year on May Day, I went to Toronto for our annual Morris dancing - we dance up the sun on May morning and summer comes! It's worked so far.

Anyway, I had a four week old bottle baby, and it was either bring her or not go at all, so Emily came to Toronto. I had all kinds of people come up to see her, most asking "Is that a goat!?!?" My usual reply was "no, she's a Japanese poodle". She was probably the most photographed goat in Canada that day.

I must say, you get some funny looks walking downtown in one of the biggest cities in Canada, wearing bells and leading a white kid on a leash. I had to carry her when she got tired, and when we passed the Chinese groceries with all the fruit, vegetables and flowers out on the sidewalk . . . her little neck would just stretch out as far as it could go!

We have a 1/2 Nubian that will 'dance' with my daughter so I took a picture so I could show people that its true. I sent the pic around work and got guesses from "Its a donkey" to "its a dog" to "Its a deer". Very few people knew what a goat looks like.

Heh, heh. That's cute, Ernie. Although, I'm glad your wife was kind enough to clue them in.

My mom and step-dad used to live in Julien Ca. and they had a pet goat ,a Nubian named Plato. When tourists would ask what kind of dog he was Jim would smile and say "transilvanian goat hound." He got lots of weird looks and a few good laughs.
