CL discussion with vet

We had to take our dogs to the vet today due to a dog fight , and got some interesting information about CL.

There's a local meat goat person who had bought a new goat without realizing it had CL. They did the lance and clean method on the cyst that was visible.

Then, the vet followed a lead he'd heard about and found some CL vaccine that was created by another Texas vet. They combined the exudate from two different strains of CL and *made* a vaccine.

The creators of the vaccine had enough left to sell to the local vet for this person's herd, and apparently got it under control.

We were focused more on the dog issues, and I didn't get to ask all the questions that were bubbling up. I'll do some follow up when we go to pick up the puppy that had to stay over night.

Yes, that's the word he used. I thought this was something new.

Also, I went to dairygoatinfo.com and read the thread about the problems with vaccinating, and it looks like it might be a huge problem with positive test results later.

So much to learn! Thank you.

Yes, many positive Boer herds have been doing this for years.

Most test now are sensitive enought to tell if it is from the vaccine or active. Goats that have it, will still have it, they just won't abcess and therefore cannot infect any other goats. Lots of herds that don't have it vaccinate either with autogenious (from another herd) or with casebac, or glanvac it they can get it.
