I would never feed day olds like that. The first day is very important to them, they must be fed little but often. I can get my kids down to 3x per day within 3-4 days of being born, but the first two days I am very sure to feed them little but often.
What I plan to do this year is get a summer job. My kids start arriving in march, but the majority arrive in May this year. Since I want to work, I'll let them have free access while I can't be there on schedule. I still plan on feeding them on schedule when I can so that I can make sure they are tame.
I plan on building little cooler feeders with the lambar equipment. The coolers would be the smaller travel sized ones, with holes drilled in it for the nipples/tubes. I plan on throwing a frozen pop bottle in there to keep the milk a little cool all day The ice should keep it on the cooler side (but not excessively cold) to prevent it from spoiling. I fed chilled milk last year most of the time, and the kids don't seem to have any issues with it. At first they would get brain freezes, though, which can be alarming; They jump up hollering for a sec, then go back to nursing, hehe. They quickly got used to it and stopped getting them after a week or so. No upset bellies or growth issues though.
