Milk strainers and filters?

Well our doe is in milk, we got our nifty Udderly EZ today and got two full big mason jars full of milk, but I forgot! I really need to strain and filter before I make chevre right? I just looked around, they want $50- for a strainer... then the filters...do I really need this or is there an alternative?

It has been colostrom kid was born Sun. It takes forever, no. it won't go through a paper coffee filter. Do you mean a metal one? I actually tried a piece of nylon stocking, which on second thought did not seem very, um, clean.

I use the big mouth funnel/strainer @ under seven dollars. Buy my filters at one of the goat supply outlet 4 9/16" I think....Love the big mouth.

yes, you really need them. I got my strainer and filters from some goat supply catalog, Caprine Supply or Hoeggers. Caprine has the better price on filters.

One of those "gold" mesh permanent coffee filters does the trick mighty fine for me.

I use a moderately stiff scrub brush to clean it thoroughly after each use.

I used to use paper coffee filters, but the milk would sometimes take forever to go through. I have a stainless steel funnel for canning - it fits the wide-mouth jars nicely, regular-mouth jars, not so good - and I buy proper milk filters. They're six inches or so, and I just fold them to make them cone-shaped. The milk goes through in seconds.

I bought one of these when I first got into goats http://www.caprinesupply.com/shop/?p...1012de5b9e701e
You can use it to fill canning jars too, you can buy the 4 9/16 milk filters at feed stores. If your only doing two or three gallon at a time it works well.

Get milk filters from a feed store and fold them into a cone, then pour milk in. I did this for years, finally got a "real" filter but that works well. I would use a commercial milk filter over anything homeade. The milk will get cleaner and probably go through faster. I used to use cheesecloth...yuck!
