Quads!

Holy goat, batman! My little Nubian girl kidded quads Sat afternoon. I couldn't believe it. All are alive and doing very well. There's one runt but the rest are about the same size. 2 girls and 2 boys. Mama had a bad spell but is doing much better. She went down Sun and I had to get her some calcium and electrolytes. She still isn't 100% but I can only imagine what her body went through birthing that litter.

How many of ya'll have had quads? Anything else I can be doing for mama besides the electrolytes, calf manna, probios, and drench?

I'm bottling all 4, actually. I'm letting her nurse too but they're still very happy to see the bottle coming in the barn. I'm going to take her out tomorrow as she seems much perkier tonight and she was wanting out. I'll start milking her tomorrow afternoon. I'm thinking of taking the babies off of her at night and then letting her have them during the day. I'll still bottle feed to make sure they're all getting what they need but I don't want her pulled down by it all. What do you think? Maybe I should just pull them off and be done with it.... I'm home from work by 12 most days so I can do the 3 hr rotation.

Oy! Some of our goats had quads before we bought them. Last year only triplets. I am hoping for twins this year. We don't need that many goats!!!

Congrats-- take and post some photos!

This will be my first year with goats. My Mocha has had quads everytime she kidded for her previous owner so that's what I'm planning on... I read in "Barnyard in Your Backyard" that nubians have more kids than other goats. The book said they could even have 5 at a time!

Has anyone here ever had their nubian have 5 kids at once?

I had a Nubian who had triplets, she wasn't the maternal type. She was very stressed by triplets. I gave away one of the babies the first week and she got much calmer with just two. She never really liked to nurse them, though. The first few weeks we had to go out and make her nurse them.

I had a Nigerian Dwarf who is very maternal. She had triplets and nursed them all very successfully. I would have thought she would have been okay with quints even. It depends on the goat.

If you want the Nubian's milk, I would pull them but give them goat's milk if you have enough. it really is the best thing for them. Keeping them separate at night and milking first thing in the morning works well.

I want to see pictures, too!

I haven't wormed her yet but will do so today. She was so puny that I was scared to do anything that would stress her further. She's up and at it today though. Yea!!! I pulled the babies this morning because...well, just because. I'll be switching it around though after tonight. I'm going to milk her tonight and then again in the morning and then she can have the babies in the morning. That way I'm only milking once daily for a little while. This doe doesn't do well for very long getting milked only once a day, probably a month or so. Once my other does kid, I'll put her back down to once a day though.

I swear I'll post pics as soon as I get my camera back. My friend took it to make prints from the Mardi Gras shots and hasn't brought it back yet. I should get it this afternoon though.

I need to name them...Any ideas? They were born during Mardi Gras so I'm thinking of using either French Creole names or MG theme names for the girls. The boys are "Hamburger" and "Roast". We'll eat them when the time comes.

Well congrats Cricket, I think?

2 yrs ago the Nubian did fine with trips on her 2nd kidding. Last yr it was quads!! The largest male was cold for awhile..maybe wasnt getting enough..milked out some colostrum, grabbed the weakest kid and kept them in the house for a couple of nights. Continued bottle feeding the weakest (& smallest) kid for about a month...till I noticed the little buggar was chowing on her mom just fine the pig!
But it sounds like you are doing great! Yes we must have pics!!! It will be easier to come up with names

Wow! Congratulations! We need pics!
My Saanen Yukiko had quads last year, but both her and Heather are bred now for 2 months and neither looks like they have 4 in there. Yukiko is a goat in a million, though. She is so patient with her babies! She's freshend 3 times, with 2 sets of trips and 1 of quads.
She had them all by herself; I wasnt even present for the birth. I was at school. She was fine when I left!
She nursed them all alone for a month, and I didnt milk her at all. It was when I noticed that her udder almost never had extra milk in it that I started supplementing with a bottle. I dont remember exactly how much, but it was a rather large amount once per day.
Anyway, good luck with them. We can certainly help with names if you post pics!

quints

I am not one-upping you, but 2 of my ND's are quints and these guys have had 6. It doesn't seem possible because they are so small, but I have some so I guess it happens. More power to them!!

Quads

My Alpine doe, Blackberry had quads (Zip, Zap, Zing, Zoom) on her second kidding. There were three does and one buck. I had to help her as the first kid was totally sideways. They were all good sized 8 lbs., and three at six pounds. The next year she had triplets, and her other three kiddings were twins. She is due again on March 1st and looks like just twins or maybe triplets. Out of her 13 kids, nine have been does.

Is mom doing better? I would make sure you give her Nutra Drench, and I have had to give Calcium before a couple times. I would guess that litter is depleting it pretty fast. LOTS of grain.
Congratulations.

I've also always heard that Nubians tend to have multiples, and the older the doe the more likely. I had a 12 yr old Nubian for 3 years...she only ever had twins. I've had two sets of triplets, one all bucks and the other all does. Last year was all twins or singles but I had a lot of FF's, maybe that makes a difference. I have two this year that look like they could have quintuplets but the one looked that way last year and had twins, the other was a triplet herself so maybe....

I would just really baby mom, free choice grain and hay etc. She will get better.
