Something Definately Wrong! What should I do?
My Nigerian buck, 9 months old definately has a blatter infesction or UC but not sure exactly what. He is now straining & getting in weird posistions to try & pee. He looks raw & I do see a small drop of blood on him also. He is drinking & eating hay like normal, we usually give him & our wether 1/4 cup of chow but not today. I can call my vet but he is not really knowledgable in goats since I think mine are the only ones he has every saw around here! Can anyone tell me what to do? I really don't know, am thinking antibiotic but what kind and what else should I do? He is going pee but I only see him go a little bit not alot yesterday & today.

your buck needs a healthy dose of AC. you also need to take him of the grain immediately. since he is a small breed buck, you might try and sit him on your lab. now you can cut the little worm like extension from his penis with a very sharp scissor.
you can get the ammonium chloride ad your feed store. dissolve a Tbl in water and drench him with that. if he is lucky, the stone will come out.
i would also give him banamine (vet Rx) this will help get the swelling from the inflammation down in the urethra.

Didn't you say that he gets alfalfa daily? I wouldn't think a 1/4 cup of chow would give him UC especially if he's getting the alfalfa to supply the calcium.
Someone just had a thread concerning a urinary tract infection. I'll see if I can find it.

i had a 10 month old buck last year with UC because he got grain with the girls. did cost me $1500 to save him. since then he doesn't get any grain and has no problems with UC. bucks really don't need grain. but if somebody wants to feed it, they should add AC to the mix.

My Vet got him right in and he did the Urethra process( cut the worm like Susanne said) also said to give him Oxytet antibiotics to keep him from getting infection and I also got the AC from the feed store. Fiasco's site said to mix 1.7 pounds to 1 gallon of water and give 40 cc, which I mixed 1 pound to a 2 1/4 pitcher and gave him 40cc. I sure hope thats OK and how often should I give him the AC water mixture. Poor little guy is surely stressed out, I feel so bad for him. I did just see him dribble a little bit. Oh and there was a small stone in the end of the worm. Vet couldn't tell if there were any more inside.

One more question, Can my little buck still breed my doe"s after he's better or will he just think he can? I still would have done the procedure to save him and the pain. The Vet said sometimes they can & sometimes not.

he will bred just fine i had no problem with my buck and he did bred the does he was suppoused to. i also got him collected last fall and everything went just fine.
it is so good that you cached the problem early. a lot of buck owner are missing the signs or think it is something else and bucks are dying.

He really is a nice little buck, I will be soooo upset if he doesn't make it. Thanks so much for the help Susanne & all of you HT people are always so nice. I am going to keep giving him the AC water daily till I'm sure he's better and no more Goat chow. My Buck & wether are going to think they are starving! Better starving than go through this! I totally stress out over things like this and feel really bad for him too!

I hope that takes care of the problem. You can always give him other treats. Mine love jackpines or red oak with the dried leaves still on.

I gave him the aspirin the vet said to give him for the pain in grapes, which he loves thank goodness he ate them like nothing. 1st time I'd tryed that. was just down to his pen again and he does seem to have more pee coming out, maybe between 1/8 and 1/4 cup but he is still straining & grunting a little so there must still be a stone, hope that AC dissolves it or he can pass it.

Just keep a close eye on him and I would continue to give him AC, I found it easier to just drench them daily rather than put it in the water. It saves on the AC as it takes a lot in the water and it probably gives the water an odd taste and mine wouldn't drink as much. When I drenched, they get thirsty and drink more. Once a buck gets this, he is more prone to it, so just watch him for the straining signs that alerted you in the first place. good luck and I hope he continues to get better. My DS buck had to go back to the vet 3 times before we finally had the surgery done to reroute his penis. Not a surgery I would ever have done again. Do not recommend it at all. It only prolonged his life by 6 months and he was miserable.

I will continue to give him the AC by drenching at least for the 7 days that Fiascofarms website suggests, and definately keep a close eye on him. My opinion is to never give him chow again but DH thinks the small amt. of 1/4 cup with the AC top dressing it would be OK. I have been a nervous wreck already today & worried sick about the little guy, I even forgot to eat myself all day. I did just go down to give him another dose of aspirin & I woke him up, so I didn't see him pee, but he didn't make any odd grunts like he has been today. I will be down again as soon as daylight hits, since we have no lights down in the goats pens. I also have been giving him & my wether apple cidar vinegar water along with regular water too. Don't know if it helps but vinegar has many medicinal purposes in people & my goats all love it so at least he'll drink more maybe.

as long as he drinks a lot, he will be fine. it is very cold right now in michigan. i give my boys very warm water twice a day and they drink more too.
i really would not give grain to a buck that already had problems with UC. if your husband insist, add a tsb AC per day per buck to prevent recurrence.
swish the bucket with a little veggi oil, add the AC, then add the grain and swish around. this will help make the AC stick to the grain.
good luck

I just realized that 1 pound ammonium chloride in 2 1/4 quart pitcher is the wrong amount. I hope I didn't hurt him. I just went down & gave the 1 tbsp in water like susanne said. He still doesn't have a steady stream of urine & seems to be still straining a bit, but there was more than just a dribble, it seemed to be about as much as yesterday evening! How long does this take?

can you get some banamine from your vet? this will help with pain, relaxe him and get the swelling down. you need to give a lot of aspirin to have the same effect. banamine is 1cc per 100#. i would give that once a day for 3 or four days.
