How much to pay for a bred Toggenburg doe?

I have a chance at a doe from a man who has to sell his herd of 15. She was bred to a Champion Boer buck. The problem is he won't give me a price. And, here in S. Central Mo. (Ozarks), the hay is scarce. Is 100.00 fair to him? If I don't buy her this week, he is taking all of his herd to the auction barn and who knows what diseases she could get! Hay is so scarce, that I found a guy to deliver round bales but at $40 each and delivery, $30! He lives 5 miles from me. I only keep 3 does and a buckling for milk and breeding. What do y'all think about a price compared with hay prices. I have no pasture as I live on a ridge and there is no brush with temps in the 3degree range. Thanks, Rachel

Really what would he get at the sale barn? Maybe tell him you will match the highest price he gets at the sale barn. Around here I could get a bred doe for $100 and we arn't having a drought.

How old is she? Do you know she is disease free now? Has she kidded before? What does her udder look like?

Well depends on the condition of the doe and if you want her really bad. Seems like it would be hard on you and yours to get another animal at this time due to hay prices and weather. I just sold a 2 year old togg doe with papers bred to a registered alpine for $150. (second kidding,so has been milked before) Might benefit you to wait for a better time of year so that you have time to prepare for more stock in your planning. Even with pastures here we are hard pressed to take care of all the animals we have, that's the reason for selling a very good milker in the first place. Would bringing another animal home stretch your abbility to keep your other animals in the condition they are now? But if you are determined to get this animal then they probably wouldn't get but $75-!00 at the auction if that much. Go to http://www.cattletoday.com and check out the recent goat sales for Missouri under market reports. They will give you a better idea what she is worth instead of just taking someones word. Sorry for the rambling, I tend to get long winded.

How much the doe is worth depends on her bloodlines, age and health. I'd make sure his herd is abcess free before buying her. If you have the option of having her bloodtested for CAE and CL before buying her, that would be a good idea. If the doe is healthy and is not out of top show lines, offering $100 for her would be a fair price. I know around here, we would likely not even get that much for a doe at an auction.

If he is truly looking at taking her to auction, I'd say $100 is fair to offer. This is a terrible time of year for decent prices at the salebarn.
But if she was my doe, she would be healthy, a decent milker, and a good doe. Bred to a good Boer buck, I wouldn't let her go for less than $250, probably more like $300 which is usually the lowest I sell good bred does for..
But I don't know the state of his herd.
I hate to see good stock go the salebarn.
Do you know the status of his herd as far as CL goes?? How far along is she bred?? Does he have any more like her?? I might know of someone interested.
