mixing breeds; problems?

Has anyone had any problems breeding a Boar Buck to Alpine does?

We have some Alpines, and a neighbor just last week had two boar bucklings. We were thinking about getting one of those boar bucklings, for our girls.

Today someone was tellign me that it might kill the girls to give birth to a half-boar kid.

It depends I would say. I would not recommend on young or small does. The Boer heads can be quite large. We did breed our saanen and lamancha does to a boer buck last year and did end up helping two of the does birth their kids. No one was hurt though. It does the job of getting your does to freshen, and may (or may not) make it easier to sell the wethers, that depends on your local market. But I would say really look at the head of that bucks relatives first. Not all boers have big heads, but I have seen some that from a dairy perspective were really huge!

dairy does make good crosses with Boer bucks, we did it all the time, as long as the buck (regardless of breed) doesnt throw HUGE headed kids, and the doe isnt too small/young then you will be fine with out any more problems than you would have had with any other Freshining,

now dont breed a small Pygmie doe to a boer as thats just asking for trouble, but Alpines should do just fine with a Boer Breeding

You can find almost everything around my area crossed with Boers, as Boers are very much in demand. I guess that there are lots of Boer crosses is often just a given. They are much in demand though. I see tons of Boer/Nubians.

I would not put a FF Alpine with a Boer buck. I bred my Loretta FB Alpine doe to my FB Boer buck twice with no problems on her 2nd breeding and have re-bred her to the same buck this year.

My first year in goats, I bred both the Alpines I had Boer. They kidded out just fine at a little over a year old. My friend used to have a dairy and bred alot of her FF dairy goats, including Alpines to a Boer with no problems. Just last year, she had an "oops" and a little Alpine doeling as well as a couple of her older half sisters got in with a Boer buck. They all had successful kiddings (though my friend was disappointed they didn't have Alpine kids). The one doeling wasn't quite a year old when she kidded.
