ADGA registration question

I purchased 2 nubian doesback in fall of '06. One was registered, the other wasn't yet, but the owner gave me all the paperwork plus copies of parent's papers. The owner was getting out of goats. Last spring I tried sending in the paperwork to get her registered (including the herd tatoo of the owner since they bred her). It was sent back with an error saying goat owner in sec 11 must be active member to use their herd tatoo. I know I should have tried and resolved them sooner, but she hasn't been bred until now and I would like to have her registered so kids can be registered. I have to use the breeders tattoo if they bred her, correct? I don't think they are active members anymore because they sold all their goats. Not sure what I should do

I would call ADGA and ask for Penny or Shirley. They can advise you on what you will have to do to get your doe registered.

If it isn't possible to register the doe with her current application, you can apply for Native On Appearance and get her registered as a grade Nubian.

This is an interesting post because something similiar happened with a goat I bred and sold last year.

When I became a member of ADGA, I was told that I couldn't have my AGS farm name or tattoo because someone had had them, but had been inactive for 10 years. I never did get my farm name registered with them because I wasn't about to change it, but I did get a different tattoo (changed my AGS tattoo by adding a # after double checking with AGS).
I cancelled my membership with ADGA 2 years ago (because of NAIS) and last year this woman went to try to register the doe she bought from me (1 yr after I cancelled membership) and was told she couldn't because the member was inactive and the tattoo had been given to someone else!
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this supposed to be a unique identification number??? Used to identify a goat and farm?

Procceed carefully, because ADGA is notorious for giving the wrong instruction when it comes to tattoo's (especially when it comes to dual registered goats with AGS). They told this woman to change the tattoo already in the ear (which you CANNOT do!), then they told her to tattoo the tail with a different number.
Yet another reason for me to avoid the ADGA registry!

Yeah, I thought it didn't seem right. I guess I will try and give them a call and see. This doe has actually turned out quite nice so I really want to have her registered.

As long as the member was an active member when the goat was born, and their tattoo number was registered to them, and you have the papers to prove that, you can register your goat. ADGA doesn't reissue tattoo sequences even when members quit, because then you'd have duplicate ID numbers out there. Just call ADGA and they'll help you. Sometimes when you send in papers during very busy times (spring/summer), they have temporary help in the office and they do make mistakes. I wouldn't give up on ADGA just yet if I were you. I've never had a problem go unresolved, and I've been a member many years, and registered many goats, both mine and purchased.

Well that's what I thought too, but I spoke to the ADGA office mgr after the woman who bought the goat called me, and I was told that the tattoo was pending for someone else. Same answer the other woman got.
The buyer ended up having to put yet another tattoo in the tail. How rediculous.
Maybe it's just a Nigerian thing, because I have spoken with very few ND breeders who felt that ADGA's office was in any way helpful.

Ok curious then. The lady I bought my 2 registered ND's from told me the best registry is AGS, but I can also register with ADGS, NDGS, and MDGA (think I got the acronyms correct) egads !! Which one is the AKC of the goat world cause I would go broke registering with them all.....?

TO JORDAN- FYI> the NAIS statement ADGA made has been unanimously dropped by the BoD, deleted from their website and no further action concerning NAIS will be taken.

time to renew your membership!

If the member does not renew after a certain time, the tattoo sequence and herd name are released back into the membership- this was changed some years back when all tattoos and herd names were permanent. now they are no longer permanent unless you pay a large fee to make them so.

wintrrwolf, I believe the AGS and ADGA are both along the lines of what we see with the dog world with the AKC and UKC. . . neither are like the, say, CKC.

If the member is no longer a member you can call ADGA and they will let you use your Tattoo, but the name stays in the farm name of breeder. They issue and attach a re-tattoo on the paperwork.

AGS registration tattoo

So I noticed that the baby buck and the 3 yr old doe I just got have tattoo letters/numbers on their AGS papers but I have been unable to locate them on the goats...ears nor tail. So I guess my question is should I tattoo them on myself? After I get the kit and all...and I am leaning to doing the tail instead of ears will that be bad if my daughter shows them in 4h or FFA shows?

Use a really bright flashlight and shine it through the back of the ear. Sometimes the tattoos are not visible without backlighting them. I have a doe that was registered as tattooed, but wasn't, so I tattooed her myself.
