Alfalfa Pellet Prices Gone Up

Bought Alfalfa pellets at the local feed store for the first time in a month. They have gone from about $10.50 to $11.15 for a 50# sack. Depressing really. I like buying from the local stores but prices are getting so high, it is cheaper to drive farther (cost me about $6.00 in gasoline) and just buy in bulk from the bigger outlet type feed store. Alfalfa pellets are between $8.00 and $9.00 there.

We have two types available here. One is better quality, about 2% higher protein, locally processed (supposedly), and are a tad bit softer. The difference *appears* to be negligible, though... except for the price! The cheap ones are about $9/50# bag, the "local" ones are about $13/50# bag!!! This is at Wal-Mart. If I buy the EXACT same "local" pellets DIRECT from the processor, I have to pay MORE! Even if I buy a minimum amount! *Sheesh!*

$12/50# here up from $10.55 in Nov. Everything on the list is up $1-2.

Heather, it's no surprise that "w" sells it for less - everything sold there is from the lowest bidder, but buyer beware! Here I can buy from TSC, Southern States and a localish mill. The feed from the mill is delivered the next day after made and I can smell and taste the difference in quality. We have a tight budget but I'll just have to give up chocolate (sniff).

Local feed mill is $12 a bag (just went up on everything), other feed stores in the area vary between $13 and $14 (sigh).

Ours are about $11 for 50 lbs now.

Be careful switching - not all alfalfa pellets are the same. We bought a bag from a different feed store than usual, got it home and then saw that they had "animal protein" in them. Yuck.

someone should pull up this thread a year from now. we'll be begging for these prices back. stuff's going up and it's not stopping. not much you can do unless you till up your back yard and plant alfalfa and corn, which ain't soundin' too bad right know. <sigh> oh the woo's of the poor farmer.

Good point - I ask when buying now because the Southern States alf pellets do have animal fat as the binder but the tag doesn't explicitly say so.
