Goats

I Was Raised With Goats But In The Latter Years I Have Seen A Name That Is Unfamiliar To Me. The 'boar Goat'. Not Sure I've Seen Any. Also Why Do I Not Hear Of Any Toggenberg Goats Any More? The Toggenberg Was A Hardy Goat. We Had Those And Sannans. Thank You For Any Explanations.

I had a couple of Toggs once. Their milk was slightly off-flavored, and I've heard that that's a common problem with that breed. I like the milk from Kinders, Nubians, and Oberhasli's much better (in that order). If you plan to get goats for milk, you might want to do some taste testing before you buy.

And, yes, Boers are a meat breed from South Africa. Kiko's are another meat breed, from New Zealand (not as common here yet as the Boers). And the Kinders that I mentioned are a mid-sized dairy/meat breed derived from crossing Pygmy bucks on Nubian does.

Boers are a meat breed South Africa. The word is spelled BOER not BOAR. The word Boer is Dutch for "farmer". They are generally white with a brownish-red colored head although other colors are acceptable too. These 'red heads" are known as "traditional" colored Boers. If a Boer goat is not fullblood, it is known as a "percentage" or %Boer.

Toggenburgs are still around but not overly plentiful. They are a very old Swiss dairy breed and there are breeders listed with the ADGA (the American dairy Goat Association www.adga.org)

Goats

Thank You To Those That Enlightened Me On 'boer' Goats. And Toggenberg Goats. I Like A Goat That Has Stand Up Ears But Know That The Others Give A Lot Of Milk Too. I Know About Goat Milk ,I WAS RAISED ON IT UNTIL I LEFT HOME AT 18.But Never Experienced Any Bad Tasting Or Odd Tasting Milk.unless There Was A 'billy' Near By. I Am Almost 70 Yo And Have Not Had Goats For Decades ,or Drank Their Milk Since The '80's But It Is The Best For You. My Questions Were Out Of Curiosity An Thanks Again.
