Should I buy her back?

My son sold one of his does and her two bucklings to a lady earlier this year. She promised they were for milking and breeding purposes and would not be "eaten" (the doe anyway).

The lady called me a couple days ago and told me she changed her mind and decided to buy some pigs and didn't have room for the doe any longer. She waned to know if I wanted to buy her back and her two bucklings. She only wanted $100 for her and the kids. I really can't afford to buy her as our well pump went out and I'm getting that replaced today so money is real tight now. If I don't buy her, she is going to the sale barn. I feel bad, just don't know what to do. I explained to my son that once sold, the animal is hers to do with as she wishes...things didn't work out and that is her right. The doe is very sweet, but was a little flightly. I have no idea how she is now (its been about 4 months)

Any thoughts????

I don't really think this is something anyone else can answer. Is it worth it to you to buy her back? Will you be able to feed her? Might take a look at her, if she looks good, probably will go to a good place. If she is looking poor maybe not. The bucks will most certainly become food.

Hi....what does your son think about it? I know if it were me, I would try and buy them back. I'm just an old softy though LOL.

Wellll... I think you have your answer. If you can't afford her, will it compromise the rest of your herd and your family to go into debt (or cut back elsewhere) to buy her back? You also have to consider her health status (testing, etc.). Was she exposed to anything you don't want back in your herd? Why did you sell her in the first place? Was there something in particular you could live without (besides her being flighty)? Depending on how you felt about that, it may influence your decision.

If you are really concerned about the doe, I'd offer to help the gal try to find a new home rather than buy her back. Good luck!

If the doe has not been exposed to other goats and you can take a look at her and you see she is healthy, consider buying her back if you can afford her. Don't buy back the bucklings, let them go to the sale barn. Taking the bucklings back will only cost you more money in the end unless they are immediately put in the freezer. perhaps you can get the doe cheaper if the kids are not included?

Only you know how you and your family feels about the goat or what your personal finances say.

It is hard to sell goats because they are pets as well as livestock. many of us really sympathise here. Hope it works out for all concerned.

I agree with southerngurl, have a look at them before saying yes, IF you decide you might buy any back. Maybe they are sick or something, or just not worth trying to handle if they are skittish. But I also agree with Feral Nature, skip buying the bucks back, just buy the doe for cheaper. I don't suppose those bucks are of much use for breeding to some of your other stock, or you would have kept them to start with.

Sounds to me like the lady just bought goats on impulse and now has buyer's regret.

When you said she's "only" asking $100 does that mean she wants less than what you sold them for initially? If so, could be a good deal if you could swing it. But you'd need to be sure these goats haven't been in danger of contracting anything.
I say if you can do it I'd go for it.

The doe kidded late summer and we really didn't need any more bucks. Put an ad in the paper and this lady wanted the doe and kids. Paid $150 for them. Now she changed her mind and wants pigs. I just paid out $1200 for a new well pump and I am flat broke. I would really consider buying her back, but am afraid of condition or disease. She does not have any other goats, but did have sheep. When she picked them up, she had several sheep in her trailer that she had just bought from the sale barn. Feeding and upkeep isn't the problem..hey what is one more...I'm just unsure about bringing her back...I'll have to do some serious thinking. Maybe I'll go to the sale barn and take a look at her and if she is ok, maybe I'll buy her back.

After reading your thoughts here....I would say DON'T take her back. I get the feeling that you have that gnawing inside your stomach, that creeping sensation that it would be just asking for trouble to take this possibly diseased goat back. How many times I wish I would have listened to my intuition when I did not. Perhaps the universe is trying to tell you something if you would stop and pay attention to the feelings that this whole goat deal conjures up. Maybe just say no.

I'd let them go to the sale barn. There was a reason you sold them in the first place, and now they've been exposed to other animals. Let her go and forget about it.
