building a debudding box

I've searched the archives and the only link on building a kid debudding box is not valid any more.

I have found the dimensions 6" x 24" x 18" made with 3/4" plywood and a hinged top.

What I need is the dimensions for the head opening. Does anyone have this measurement?

I will look around to see if we still have it, but will offer the following advice for consideration...skip the box.
We just sort of kneel/sit on the kids now to do it. It is much easier than getting them into the box, and easier to hold them still. It's kind of hard to grip their heads once they are in the box, as the box itself gets in the way.

Just my 2 cents.

My opening on the one I built has a six inch vertical opening that tapers from 2-3/4" to 1-3/4" in six inches.

I used this picture to build mine. It's from Hoegers.

I also made an opposing slide in piece of wood that is inverted and kind of clamps thier head in place right behind the first piece.

Anyone use a different-sized box for Nigerian Dwarf goats?

I use towels and kneel over the kids. There's an explanation at this link http://www.glimmercroft.com/Disbudding.html . It gives great control and there's no need to adjust for tiny or larger kids.

I either kneel or sit on kids as well, usually having someone else help hold the heads still.

When I don't have a helper, I sit on the floor with my back leaning against the wall. I pull the kids up between my legs and hold their heads between my thighs, and use my calves to help hold them still.

Whenever you're working with a hot iron that close to your hands, I reccommend wearing leather gloves.
