SQ shots 101

Could anyone explain how to or know of a web page that explains how to give a goat a shot. I could probably figure it out, but would like a simple description. I haven't had to give my guys shots yet, and I sure don't want to wait until I really need to.

Another ?...How do you guys deal with scripts for your goats? Do you ask your local cat/dog vet to write it for what you need and then send it to Jeffers (or which ever you use)?

SQ shots are pretty simple. I usually give mine behind the front elbow (far enough behind to not irritate them if it leaves a bump). You grab a bit of the skin and lift it up, making a "tent" with the skin. You then put the needle in, careful not to go through to the other side, and give the injection in the "tent". It is easy to go all the way through, especially on the young ones, so make sure you haven't! Make a note of which side and where you give it so if you get a bump (CDT shots often leave one) you will not be in a panic months later wondering if you have CL! I used to do mine in front of the shoulder, but this is a more common place for CL abcesses so have since changed.

As for scripts, most meds you can order through Jeffers without one. I have my vet order anything else I may need for me.

A tip for SQ shots to avoid jabbing yourself or re-sticking the goat when it moves unexpectedly is to hold the tent of skin in the same hand as the syringe/needle. This way you move with the goat and avoid pulling the needle out before you're done or sticking deeper. I learned this from my vet on my cat that needed SQ injections for a while.

In some states it's illegal for a Vet to write a prescription for an animal they havent seen. Some will do it anyway, depending on your relationship with them. Most vaccines dont require a prescription anyway
