Ear injury, Blood loss?

Two of our bucks got into a fight yesterday and one (Nubian) hurt his ear. I don't know exactly how it happened (wasn't there), he has a 1 1/2 - 2 inch scrap (closed/not open) on the bottom edge of his ear and the entire bottom half of his ear is swollen (about 2 - 3 Xs normal size) which has me a little worried? He won't move it either, and it hangs heavy but no other sign of an injury except the scrape. He did look like part of his face was slightly swollen yesterday, but appears fine now. My concern is that he may have lost too much blood (we were finding drips of it on all the barn walls etc.) He has been separated and we are keep a close eye on him, but he dose seem off. Kind of lacking in energy, he is eating and drinking fine, just not peppy, and sleeping more. I did give him some banamine for the swelling, and some probiotics, is there something else I can give him? Any advice ?

I think his pride may be as hurt as anything else. I don't think he could have lost enough blood to be too worried...sounds like you've given him what you can until he gets over it. Poor little guy. I'm sure someone will tell you this is why you should have LaManchas.

Well, if you have LaManchas, you only have to de-horn rather than de-horn and de-ear. It's much less traumatic

He likely has a hematoma, the swelling of blood within the skin of the ear flap. With dogs, it's often incised and drained. The care you describe should be sufficient, unless things change for the worse.
Ears, as well as heads, bleed a lot when injured. As long as he is drinking, eating, ruminating normally, then I would give it time and observation.

I thought it might be something like that too, blood under the skin. He was dripping again out from the scrap this morning, and the "swelling" looked down a little. Thinking it might be blood instead of swelling I just left it bleed / drain, as it wasn't coming in gushes or anything, just little drips. Other then that we're cleaning/disinfecting a couple times a day. Attitude wise, he has perked up a bit, back to his bucky self. And yes eating and drinking fine, so we'll just keep watching it for now.

poor guy. One of my does scraped her ear. Never did see any blood or swelling. Just the skin gone off part of it. I treated it as any other wound. Now hers was smack dap in the middle of her ear. not to wide by about an inch or so longer. Eventually the part under the scrape disapeared, so she has a hole in her ear, a nice place for an ear ring. So just keep an eye on it, and don't be surprised if he gets a notch in his ear from it.
