Anyone catch the Amazing Race last night?

The contestants were in Africa and one of their challenges was to transport a goat via bicycle to a goat market. Yes, I understand goats are simply commodities in this impoverished, developing nation but it was still sad to see. Goats were tied up and laid in baskets - many of them crying out in the hot sun. Very thin. Just a big reality check from the prime conditions our goats enjoy here in the west.

I normally don't watch that show, but I did catch that part last night where they were picking up baskets with what appeared to be newborn goats tied inside them. Some appeared to be dead. What is the idea of having them tied up in baskets??

Easier to carry, easier to butcher - no bullet involved.

The Hispanics and other ethnicities would come to my house, hog-tie a goat (even the large ones) and put it in the trunk of their vehicle to take home.

When they would butcher at my house? Same thing. Pretty much hold down or hog-tie and then slit the throat - high up near the head.

It seems odd for a bit, then a light bulb goes off in your brain. "Ahhhh, I see."

Knives are cheap. Bullets aren't. And goat kids are expendable. The milk is more desired.

I watched the program lastnight also an it made me feel very sad and very upset of how them poor babies was done. I almost cried when that one little baby cried out when that one gal asked the little baby was it to tight? Now that just broke my heart to hear it cry like that. It sounded awful.

Okay... how many of you folks have ever had goats... they ALWAYS sound like some bodies trying to kill them. These goats are FOOD not someone's pet in the back yard. To be overfed and pampered.

There are over 800 million goats world-wide... they thrive were cattle etc. perish. If you want to feel sorry for something it's the poor people living/existing in these countries

Did you see the show? These were babies trussed up so tightly they couldn't move, laying in plastic baskets. They were out in the open under the hot desert sun with no shade or water.

Yes I did see the show... The entire scene lasted less than a couple minutes... there was no way to determine with any accuaracy exactly what was going on or how these animals were truly being treated. The goats were in plastic clothes baskets with what appeared to be some type of bedding and they were strapped down so that they couldn't jump out and hurt themselves.

And how exactly do you know they were without water and if so for how long. Have you ever seen goats on the range in Texas when the temperature is over 100 degrees with no shade.

Goats can survive nicely for several days without food or water.

If your heart wants to bleed... do it for the people!

I don't think anyone here DIDN'T feel for those less fortunate. But this IS the Goat Forum

just because the people are suffering, doesn't give anyone the right to abuse an animal. Cruelty is cruelty, wether it be human or animal. If that goat is there to provide food than proper care should be provided by the owner. if a human is not properly cared for, well that is just self worth.

What makes you think they were not getting proper care? Just because they don't handle livestock like we do here doesn't mean it is cruel.

Just look at the "rescue goat' thread... now that's cruel. We are suppossed to be better educated and know better when it comes to compassion and animal cruelty but animal cruelty happens in this country all the time... look at the idiot football player with his dog fights.

These people, I'm sure, were doing the best they could with what they had available.

No one is going to convince me that those goats on Amazing Race were being treated cruely just because they made a little noise when they were in the basket.

It just SEEMS harsh until you put yourself in the other culture's shoes.

Cruelty is as it is.

Necessity is EXACTLY what it is as well.

On a side note: I bet the Amazing Race gets a lot of PETA folks flailing about over THAT episode. They'll be flying over there to release all the goats... Just like they did the mink from that mink farm.
