About to be only dairy goats in the county

When I bring my dairy goats to Texas for the winter, we will have the only dairy goats in the county. I've been making the rounds of the feed stores, which is easy, as there are only TWO. I've had to turn down goat feed that was clearly labeled as not to feed to lactating goats, explain why I needed alfalfa hay, and explain that I don't need the medicated feed with the stuff for buck urinary health.

I told my feed store owner today that he was going to learn a lot over the next few months!!

Well, you will have to educate all concerned, LOL! Alfalfa pellets will be better than alfafa hay here in Texas unless you are strangely lucky to find something green and fresh, which is near impossible here. So I feed alfafa pellets and coastal bermuda hay. Oats are my grain, the feed stores have "Race Horse Oats". I don't use goat pellets generally. If I had ONE feed, it would be my wonderful dear alfalfa pellets

There are only 3 stores that carry feed around here (one being Tractor Supply!) and I can only get alfalfa pellets at one of those. (NOT Tractor Supply!)
I have most likely (not sure) some of the few dairy goats in this area. When I was looking I couldn't find anything but Spanish and Boer. They feed all these goats that goat chow stuff.
When I go to get hay I usually have to listen to "well this hay is too good for goats" So, since WHEN is coastal or alfalfa (if I find it) too good for my girls???

Good luck Rose!

Luckily, one of our feedstores is familiar with goats and knows that "horse hay" and "goat hay" are the same thing....they will pick through it and find the better bales for goat and horse people knowing that cows will eat things that goats and horses turn their noses up at.

Up here Tractor Supply caries "Tizz Wizz" for goats. Our goats love it. A lot of people around here have goats and buy it up faster than they can order it. It goes for about $11 per 50 lbs.
