Forgot my cheesecloth

I came south with almost two gallons of goat milk, my rennet, my starter, but I realized *after* I got started making feta that my cheesecloth is 700 miles away. It's 20 miles to the nearest store that *might* have cheesecloth.

I cut a piece of quilt back that was leftover from the last project. (muslin, not the batting) My feta is draining ok. I think it may take a bit longer to drain due to the tight weave, as compared to cheesecloth.

Onward and upward! Through the fog! Excelsior!

I splurged and bought the baskets for draining feta. I really am happy with how well they work.

I use pillowcases that I open along the seams. Or you can use a lrage bandana. Just be sure to clean it in a little hot water and a tiny bit of bleach and rinse well.

I ironed it with a hot steam iron. Hope that was good enough!

I thought the baskets were for chevre. No? But, they are in Missouri, too!

I use chevre molds for my soft cheese..DH is fond of the pyramid shapes. I also have baskets for both feta and ricotta. They are so nice to use. We have pets so when using any type of cloth that isn't disposable there's a chance of finding a bit of fur on it.

Yes, I know what you mean about pet hair. At my best friend's house, where we make the cheese, he and his DW allow the dogs in the house. If I wash my cheesecloth in their washer, it's just as likely to have dog hair on it when it comes out. I examine and iron it before use.
