REALLY Bad Week - kind of graphic

DD's rabbit died on Monday, the lamb born on Wed died at 10:00 Sat night - ask me how I know the exact time and we got up this morning to our LGD Great Pyr with a nose bleed. Took her to the vet - second trip in in as many days - wonderful to have a vet that cares enough to meet us at his office at 11:00 a.m. on a Sunday. He is almost positive it is rat poison. Her eyelids were totally white as well as her gums. He gave her about 15 cc (I did not see the amount, am just going by what it looked like in the syringes) of Vit K and kept her there. Vit K every 12 hrs.

He is not optimistic at all but did not suggest putting her down. He said there is a chance she will make it but it does not look good. Apparently rat poison shuts down clotting in the blood so she is probably bleeding internally -she is breathing heavy so probably into her lungs. He said that the only dogs he has ever seen make it are the ones that bleed out where it can be seen - like the nose. Otherwise they are usually dead before anyone knows something is really wrong. He said she looks really bad though.

So now we have to find out where she got it from. Hopefully a neighbor put it out innocently. The vet said she would either have to have gotten a very large dose or have been getting a little bit over a long time because she is so big (95 lbs).

Very good chance that we are going to be looking for another LGD soon.

I'm so sorry! I hope that you got your dog to the vet in time and that she pulls through.

Rat poison worries me - I won't have it on my farm, but you can't control what your neighbours do.

Wow, you have had it rough! Hope things turn sunny for you again real soon, and I hope your dog pulls through.

Rosie made it through the night so we are holding out hope for her.
Thanks for the well wishes.
I know this post was OT - I guess I just needed to "talk" to "someone."

I am praying for you!! I know vit K works as my sister's three schnauzers got into some and all pulled through thanks to the vit K shots--hopefully your LGD will too!

Rosie is still alive! The vet is now "cautiously optimistic" that she will pull through. Thanks for all the prayers.

Thanks to all of you. Rosie is still making it. The vet said that she stood up on her own today for the first time today since she has been there. Her red blood cell count was 15 about 24 hrs after being on Vit K. 33 is normal but the vet said the 15 was much higher than he thought it would be. Please continue to pray for her.

So sorry this happenned, I am glad Rosie is doing better.

You need to find out where she got into the poison and either remove it or keep her from getting to it. She knows it is there and will eat it if she can get to it again.

My step-father lives down the hill and had it in a storage room to keep the mice and rats from eating his fish seins. Apparently she got into the storage room. He is getting 2 cats and has already gotten rid of the poison. It just never occured to him that she would get into the room or eat the poison if she did. He is beside himself over this. I am just glad that nobody did this on purpose.

I'm very pleased to hear that your dog is making progress. That's wonderful news. I'll keep wishing for a speedy recovery for her.

Your poor stepfather! He must be just so upset that this happened. Animals are like small children, you just can't assume that they won't get into things. One of my goats managed to get hold of a roll of paper towels through the wire mesh - cardboard core and all. There were only a few scraps of paper towel in the pen last night, so I guess they ate the rest. At least that's not harmful to them!

I am soooo glad that she is improving. I read this thread a day or so ago, then I stumbled across a similar post on a different forum here and looked to see if I could find this and get an update. Long story short - you have been on my mind and I am very glad to get the update, more prayers and good thoughts headed your way.

Hugs,
Anne

I am sure he is feeling very guilty. Sometimes you just don't realize they can get to it until they do. The important thing is that he got rid of it so when she gets home she will be safe

Please give us a update. How is she doing? I can only imagine how your step father feels. Dogs are like kids, never think they can't, because they will prove you wrong.

Rosie is doing better!!! The vet said that if her blood count is still increasing, she can come home tomorrow afternoon! I am so glad. He believes she will make it. He told DH this morning that he is really surprised that she pulled through but that she should be over the worst now. She still does not want to eat much for them. He also said that when she comes home she MUST NOT work. She is to be kept quiet for a minimum of 2 weeks. For her, this is going to be some great feat. DH and I are going back and forth over whether to let her in the house or keep her in the barn. He is really afraid that she will find a way out of the barn to be outside at night. I know we can keep her quieter in the house. I don't know. Guess we will decide tonight.

Thank you all for your well wishes and prayers for her. We really did not think she would survive this.
