Squirrels are cutting our browse
There's a big shortage of acorns in the Ozarks this fall due to the very late freeze. The few trees that are making acorns have them on the tip ends of the small new branches, and the branch can't support the weight of the squirrel when it climbs out to grab the acorn.
The squirrels are going as far out as they can balance, then chewing off the ends of the branches, which drops a big cluster of fresh young oak leaves and acorns to the ground. The squirrels harvest the acorns, and leave piles of oak leaf clusters, still attached to the stem.
We've been going out twice a day to the one oak tree that has squirrels working this system and picking up a bushel of oak leaf clusters for our two goats.
Sure has helped out! Thank you, squirrels!
