Question Purebred/America/Grade???

I'm still researching goats, even if the town turned me down this go-round. I might succeed in a later try, we might move, who knows? Anyway, I was wondering, what's the difference between an American Oberhasli and a Purebred Oberhasli? If "American" isn't purebred, how is it different from grade?

Before you even get to this in oberhasli...if you are even thinking about oberhasli, come to our forum dairygoatinfo.com and talk to Kaye White. Vicki

An Amercian or Canadian is just the breeding of one grade animal. Heres what happens

Purebred-
All parents were reg.

Amercian/Canadian-
You must grade up. here are the steps
1.start with grade doe. breed with REG buck. you get #2.
2.Breed 50% Recorded grade doe with another Reg buck. you get #3.
3.Breed 75% recorded grade with yet agian another REG buck. you grt #4.
4. Breed 87.5% recorded grade with yet ANOTHER! REG buck. you get #5.
5. Breed 93.8% (at this point you can show in purebred class so I will call it purebred.) breed with REG buck you get! #6.
99.99% or Amercian/Canadian!

Hope it helps (Sorry if my last 2 %'s are off. It has been a LONG day)

Doelings become American in one less generation than bucklings. Also, I believe that doelings would be recorded as Americans at 87.5% and bucklings at 93.8% (or whatever)....rather than 93.8 and 99.9. Or not, I may have to go check adga site again.

So buying American does and breeding them to a purebred buck would be a good way to start a herd?

yes. Even buying a 87.5% is good way! They are shown in purebred classes, and are usally cheaper then 100% reg does. it just means you need to grade up 2 more times to use a buck.
