Critique please?

This is my little doe now, she is getting so big, and such a princess. Was wanting to see what you guys think of her. I am learning a lot from this forum.

She is 7 1/2 months old.

LOL You always crack me up.

No I don't have the doe you are talking about. I bought her dam up in Missouri, she was bred at the time to a buck that Ozark Jewels used to have. Her dam had a buck and her.

Well, I'll get critique-y on ya. It's much easier to do on live goats than on pictures, though.

She looks like she is weak in the chine. See how she dips down from the withers, & goes up to the hips? An ideal back is nearly straight and slightly downhill from the withers to the hips. She is also a hair higher in the hips than the withers when her feet are squarely under her.

She also has a steep rump with accompanying posty hind legs. This is fairly common, but not desirable, in US Nubians. Posty hind legs will get straighter as the animal ages so we don't want to see that in a young kid.

She looks like she has good width now. It's hard to see her depth of chest (and foreleg structure) because of her coloration. Her body could be longer.

She has good width in the escutchion and between the hocks. I think her hind feet have been placed a little too far apart & forefeet too close in the last picture and if this doe took a couple of steps forward, her hocks and feet would come under her. Then we would see a nice, squarely set set of feet & legs as veiwed from behind.

She has a good extension of brisket and it looks like the tops of her shoulders blend smoothly into the withers. She is showing a lot of dairy character with her long neck & cleanly defined bone & muscle. She will make milk for you instead of goat fat.

Her teats will probably stay long when she freshens, so you will not have the nightmare of teeny tiny thimble teats on a FF.

I love that color! Like butterscotch pudding with swirls of cream.

If this were my kid, I would breed her to a buck with a lot of "E" backs, rumps & body capacity in his daughters and/or sisters, dam & granddams.

thanks for the info. I hope I can find any good buck around here! They seem to be in short supply. I wish I could house a couple, but dad wouldn't go for that.

I have never shown and don't really know how to pose them. She's also never been made to pose, and hardly wanted to stand in one place too long. She's a little pansy and still wants to be near mama.

Her dam had easy to milk teats from the start. She is so fast and easy to milk.

Ok, here come the dumb newbie questions...

What is an escutchion?

What's an "E" back?

Many breeders will lease out a buck, board your does for breeding, or let you bring does in heat to them. You can locate them through state associations, ADGA member guide, yahoo breed or district groups, or show results. It is worth every penny (and mile driven!) to use a really good buck.

Having her in a natural pose is more informative than setting her up show-style. If you go to a show, you'll see that nobody has does that just set up and pose. We have to fool with them and just when they look perfect, they slump over, cross their legs, twist their neck... and THAT's when the judge looks at you.

The escutcheon ( I can never spell it right) is the arch under the pelvis between the thighs where the udder will go.

"E" backs, etc refers to linear appraisal score of "Excellent", the highest possible score. LA breaks goat physical traits into groups and scores some on a linear scale from 1-50 to express what that individual trait look like; letter grades for more complex traits, and letter grades for the 4 scorecard categories culminating in an overall score. More info here
http://www.adgatype.org/Linear%20Appraisal%20Def'n.htm

You can get the various scores from ADGAgenetics.org, Preformance volumes from ADGA, the ADGA members only section. The preformance volumes are the most complete.
