Question Bad with the math.. can you help

I have a feed ratio I would like to use but need help in figuring the protien in it.
2 parts oats
2 parts barley
1/2 part corn
handful of BOSS

That would be the base, to that how much calf manna do I need to add to get 16-17 % protien.
Tha calf manna i have is 25%
They get grass hay and alfalfa pellets and loose minerals.
Thanks I can calculate when lowering the protien but I can not seem to get the formula in my head to increase.

Steff , can you find barley cheap ? I cannot. If its to high you can cut it out. I also get blue seals sunshine pellets instead of calf manna . My girls like it better and its a little cheaper.
As for protein I have no clue my mix is 4 oats, 1 corn , 1 boss and a handfull of sunshine on top . My milkers milking on average a gallon a day are holding weight. They get browse and second cut hay . I do not use alfalfa because they dont like it and waste more than they eat .

I would ask my feed mill what % of fat each one had and go from there .

In order to bring that protein up in your feed by adding calf manna you are going to be adding a LOT of calf manna, but if you can afford that then it's great. Calf Manna is some good stuff.

Here is what I came up with. It is a 16.1% Protein feed. I didn't calculate fat, so I have no idea.

50 lb. mix 16% Protein
12 lb. oats
12 lb. barley
6 lb. corn
1 lb. BOSS
19 lb. Calf Manna

Good luck with it!

if you feed alfa pellets your protein would be cheaper
you don't need the protein in the grain if you feed alfa

I can not come up with a way to give them free choice alfalfa. I have llamas a donkey a calf and a sheep out in the same pasture. It would really be a waste to feed them the alfalfa.
I can however feed straight alfalfa pellets at the night feeding. Would I then need to worry about the protien in the morning?
I really appriciate the help.
Patty, The barley costs the same as the oats, both $9 for 50 lbs.

A "handful" of BOSS is tricky. Do you mean a handful for each animal per day?

Just as a math problem, I came up with the following for 100 pounds of mixture:

Corn, 8 lbs
Oats, 32 lbs
Barley, 32 lbs
Boss, 3 lbs
Calf Manna, 25 lbs

This assumes the percentages of protein found this extension service website, http://www.luresext.edu/goats/resea..._TDN_Table.html , other sites vary slightly:

I measured 1/2 cup of BOSS to weigh about 2 ounces. If a goat ate 2 lbs of this mixture per day, it would be eating 1 ounce of BOSS (about 1/4 cup).

Hope this helps

Yep way too much Calf Manna. What if i substitute Linseed meal at 35% protien. It is also only $12 for 50lbs.
