Help. Sick wether

I am goatsitting for family and have a three month old wether that is just laying around listless. I had the vet come last night and she gave him a shot of Vitamin E and Selenium and an IV because he was dehydrated. This morning he still doesn't have any "get up and go". He is peeing fine and his poop is tar colored and soft, but not loose. He doesn't want to eat or drink. I have been drenching him with warm goat milk but don't know how much I should give him. I am open to any suggestions.

What's his temp?
Did the vet take a fecal sample to check for cocci and worm overload?
Does he appear bloated, I'd drench him with some baking powder mixed with water and try to get some probio. Are his gums/eyelids dark pink or really pale?
What were the owners feeding him?

Susan

Yesterday his temp was 100.25. This morning it is 100.9. His owners were giving him hay, grain, water. Minerals and baking soda free choice. The vet said to give him the dextrose IV but didn't say how often. No she didn't take a fecal sample. His gums are white.

Can you get some red cell from the farm store? Some people use that to fight anemia. I think it's in the horse section.

A friend of mine had a goat that kept going down like that and until we figured out what was wrong he used Power Boost. It worked really well to give the goat the energy to get on her feet.

you really need more info. could be worms, coccidia, infection, the stools should be berries. giving him some pepto at the reccomended human dose might buy some time. low temp though, not good. can you get ahold of the owners? you need to know how far they want you to go to save this goat and what they want you to do. once they are sick like this they can go downhill really fast. if he were mine and the vet didn't seem to have a clue......

pepto- reccomended dose

ivermectin (wormer)- use a horse wormer dose at 3x the horse weight (look a the active ingredient to find ivermectin, its under many brand names)

sulmet -1ml per 5lbs once then 1ml per 10lbs for 4 days orally (this is at the feed store its a drinking water solution, give it straight from the bottle, if they don't have the liquid solution they might have a bolus, which is a big pill, figure the dose in percentage of the pill, for instance it might be 1/4 of the pill, crush it and mix it with a little, water or oil and dose. you could also use Albon although I am not sure of the dose. try to avoid amprolium as the active ingredient.

hay only if he is eating at all- I wouldn't drench more than 4 oz milk at a time, every couple of hours if you really have to. too much is worse than too little.

If his gums are white he has a very heavy worm load. What do you have for wormers ?

Follow the above and he also needs some goat nutri drench or horse red cell to help build his blood.

He does not have much time so you need to act fast. This is also not something that just started in the last few days. It is not because of something you did wrong.

I'm sorry to hear this but it had nothing to do with you. The problem was already in the making.

Do they own other goats? If so I would check everyones gums because some of the other goats are probably in trouble but not showing it yet.
